Colorado River, Colorado, Fishing Report - 04/21/17
The stream levels are up a little, too high to wade in some places, but fine
otherwise. There is some rain and snow in the forecast this coming week. There
are lots of hatches going on including little Browns and Skwala stoneflies.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of rain or snow from Monday
through next Thursday, otherwise clear. Highs will range from 51 to 70 degrees
and lows from 28 to 35 degrees.
Recommended Trout Flies:
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Blue-winged Olives: size 18/20, nymph, emergers, duns and spinners
Midges: Blood (Red), sizes 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Cream, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Light Green, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Little Brown Stoneflies, size 14, nymphs and adults
Skwala Stoneflies, size 10, nymphs and adults
Little Black Grannom Caddis, size 18, pupa and adults
March Browns, size 12/14, nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
The Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin streamers are good flies to use for the
larger trout. It is almost alway best to fish a tandem Midge rig under a small strike
indicator with the midge lava as the bottom fly and the midge pupa as the top fly. Fish
the adult midge only when you observe trout feeding on the surface.
Midges are hatching and will become more and more important as the water cools.
Skwala stoneflies are hatching.
Little Brown stoneflies are hatching.
Little Black Grannom Caddis are hatching.
March Browns are hatching.
