01/25/14 Steelhead are being caught on a regular basis even though the water
temperature is sill low. One anglers is using our Perfect Fly Green Sedge, Spotted Sedge
and Giant Black Stonfly nymphs and doing well.
02/01/14 Floating the river still is a little difficult because the water is back low. It is clear of
ice . There is plenty of access in the Troy area. Plenty of steelhead are being caught.
Two anglers ordered our Perfect Fly Spey flies this past week.
02/08/14 Fish are continuing to be caught but it is still taking lots of cast to get a hook up.
The coming warmer weather and rain should change this.
02/15/14 Very high water levels exist and more rain and rain/snow is in the forecast.
Conditions should improve within the next few days.
12/02/13 Local contact reported water stained and very cold. Not much action at all.
12/15/13 Local contact reporting the River has cleared of ice but no fish reported
caught. He doesn't think anyone is fishing it because it should be in good shape. He
plans to do so in the next couple of days. River is flowing at the normal level at 1210
cfs and 3.8 ft.
02/22/14 The stream is still high and we have not received any reports of any fish being
caught. Watch the stream levels. They are currently falling. Fishing should be good when
it recedes some more.
03/01/14 The river is flowing at 5560 at 6.12 feet or high. There is rain in the forecast
every day for the next week, so levels will probably be too high to fish.
03/08/14 There are a few fish being caught but the river is very high. Expect more high
water this coming week.
03/15/14 The water levels have dropped but still on the high side. We didn't get any
reports of catches this past week.
03/29/14 The stream is currently very high (blown out) and lots more rain is in the forecast.
04/05/14 Flows are still high and few fish being taken. Remember, the season closes on
April 15th. If levels reside, fishing could be good before it ends.
04/12/14 The river is still high and muddy. Keep a check on the levels.
08/30/14 Stream levels have dropped below normal. Steelhead season closed April 15th.
We will resume report as appropriate. We should get some steelhead coming in this
coming month, or September.
09/27/14 A few steelhead have been caught recently but the main run is yet to
happen. Stream flows are currently low.
10/11/14 Some fall Chinook have entered the river. Steelhead catches have
increase the past two weeks but low water is making the catching tough. It should
continue to improve with some rain in the forecast next week.
10/18/14 Even though the water has a stain to it, fishing has improved this past
week. Anglers are catching rainbows and steelhead.
10/25/14 More good reports from anglers catching steelhead even though the water
is still relatively low.
11/08/14 Anglers are doing great catching plenty of steelhead. Water levels are okay and
conditions still good.
11/29/14 Ice has slowed things down some but steelhead fishing has been good. Watch
for warmer weather and melting ice.
Grande Ronde River, Oregon - Fishing Report - Updated
September 04, 2018
USGS Real-time Stream Level:
12/07/14 The ice is gone and the flows are up. This flow increase is moving the fish
upriver. You can now use a raft or drift boat. The water temps are much lower and
nymphing may be the best bet in the slower holding water. Perfect Fly Steelhead Flies
12/20/14Two more excellent steelhead reports come in the past few days. The levels are
up and fish are being caught swinging flies and on nymphs. If the weather holds, the
fishing should continue to be good.
12/27/14 Stream levels are very high and the water is dingy. They are falling but some
more rain and snow forecast. Fishing should be good when the levels subside.
01/03/15 We received two good reports from customers this past week. Levels are
back near normal and fish are being caught swinging flies. Check out the Perfect Fly
01/10/15 No reports from this past week but conditions look better with warmer water
and good levels predicted for this next week. Let us hear from you.
01/17/15 Higher water slowed the catching down some but it is falling and there is not
that much rain forecast. A few fish are being caught.
01/24/15 No reports from the past week. The stream levels are still on the high side.
01/31/15 Stream levels have come down and good weather has increased the
"catching". Some larger, two salt fish are being caught. Three good reports from
customers using our steeelhead flies.
02/07/15 The river is currently blown out. The rain will continue through
Monday and it will take a few days for it to get back to fishable levels.
02/21/15 The river is back down in good shape and full of two salt fish. We received
one good customer report yesterday but more should come soon.
03/07/15 Our customers have caught a good many fish this past week. The water
levels are down and you may need to go to nymphs to continue the action.
03/21/15 Two customers reported catching some nice size steelhead this past week.
Levels are currently down.
03/28/15 More good reports. The water came up some but it is still fishable.
04/11/15 Fishing has continued to be fair with good stream levels and steelhead being
caught by our customers.
04/25/15 Fishing season closed April 15th. It will reopen on May 23th.
05/16/15 Season opens in one more week.
03/23/15 Season is open as of today. Summer steelhead on a dry fly? We will see.
05/30/15 Aquatic insect hatches, including Golden Stoneflies, Spotted and Green sedges
(caddisflies) are hatching.
06/06/15 Bass season opens today. Stream levels are a little low. Salmon season
06/13/15 Trout fishing has been decent the past week. Some hatches taking place.
07/11/15 Smallmouth bass fishing is very good near the mouth. That's about the only
07/25/15 The cooler weather this coming week should help the fishing opportunity.
08/01/15 Closed to spring Chinook, open to trout and bass. Small bass fishing is good.
08/08/15 Not much change but some rain and cooler weather is forecast. Smallmouth
bass fishing is still red hot.
08/15/25 Smallmouth bass fishing continues to be red hot. 2:00 PM closure for trout.
08/22/15 Customers catching smallmouth topwater using Stealth Bombers. See link below.
08/29/15 Things should change soon but for now, smallmouth bass is the only option.
09/05/15 Conditions have improved some with some rain and cooler weather but not near
enough to make a substantial difference. Smallmouth bass is the best option.
09/12/15 Some steelhead are moving into the river according to the counts. It should
be much better soon.
09/26/15 The steelhead are slowly arriving, but slow is the key word. The numbers
will increase next month.
10/10/15 Steelhead are in the river in decent numbers but more fish will be arriving later
this month. Two good reports came in on trout. October Caddis are hatching.
10/17/15 Good weather and stream conditions continue for the Grande Ronde and
more rainbows are being caught. This should continue through the next week.
10/24/15 A few steelhead are being caught but the numbers are low. Rain is needed
to bring more fish into the river and we may get it this coming week.
10/31/15 The recent increased water levels have brought more steelhead in the river
and anglers are catching decent numbers of them. This should only get better with
more rain coming.
11/14/15 Excellent conditions with lots of steelhead being caught. Anglers are swinging,
nymphing and using eggs. Be sure to check out our Perfect Fly Steelhead flies.
12/05/15 It has been cold and some ice in the river but should be warming back up
some and helping the situation. Fish steelhead nymphs in the slack water out of the
12/26/15 Customers are reporting that they are catching some steelhead near
Troy. The levels are a little high but okay and more fish are in the river thanks to
the recent high water levels.
01/09/16 Lots of fish are in the system but ice is a major problem. It is going to be
better this coming week. You can catch them now but it takes slow presentations of
nymphs out of the main current.
01/23/16 Lots of steelhead have been caught recently but the cold water
temperatures has the success rate down a lot compared to what it could be. You just
have to watch the weather and stream levels. The fish are there is good numbers.
02/13/16 Steelhead were being caught in decent numbers, and the warmer water and
weather helped but the stream is on the way up now, and you have to watch the levels.
02/27/16 The river is back down to a normal stream level and clear. Anglers are
catching steelhead swinging and with nymphs. There is a lot of rain, so you need to
watch the stream levels. They likely will go back up soon.
03/05/16 There has been a lot of rain and the river is far too high to fish right now.
There's more rain coming and it may be a while, so watch the levels.
03/12/16 Sorry, still extremely high with more rain in the forecast.
03/26/16 The river is still too high. Troy is showing it at 5980 cfs and it should be
around 4200 cfs at the most to provide good conditions.
04/09/16 The stream level at Troy is back up again, too high for much opportunity.
The flows are about 5,960 this morning and need to be around 4,009 for any good
opportunity to catch fish.
05/07/16 The steelhead season is done for the year. Trout are being caught in
good numbers below Troy. The discharges and levels have been good lately.
05/21/16 Get ready for a good smallmouth bass season. Conditions are currently
06/11/16 The river has produced a few nice size trout. It is mostly clear now that the
heavy rains have stopped. Smallmouth bass are also being caught on streamers.
07/02/16 Smallmouth bass fishing is very good at this time. The stream levels are
running on the low side. Top water popping bugs, stealth bombers, & streamers.
07/30/16 The smallmouth bass fishing remains excellent in the lower river. It is too warm
for any decent trout fishing opportunity. Fish early and late for the smallmouth. .
08/06/16 It is cooling down some. Smallmouth bass fishing continues to be excellent.
Fish popping bugs early and late and our Crayfish patterns during the day.
08/20/16 The weather is going to be very hot with no chance of rain. Smallmouth
bass are the only game but it is good. Stealth bombers, baby Popping frogs, Crayfish
both shallow and deep running dumbbell eye patterns are working good.
09/03/16 The steelhead season is open but so far, none have come into the river.
They will later this month. Smallmouth bass fishing continues to be very good with
large numbers being caught by our customers, and many on top.
09/17/16 There are still no reports of steelhead being caught although they should
be moving into the river. There are trout to be caught and the lower water
temperature is going to help. Smallmouth bass continues to the be best option.
10/08/16 The steelhead are showing up in good numbers and some are being
caught. Chinook salmon are spawning.
10/22/16 There are a good many steelhead being caught. The stream levels have
been running form 1100 to 1300 cfs. There is more rain this coming week.
10/29/16 Thestream levels are at 1380 cfs. Lots of boats fishing but the higher levels
has slowed the action it seems.
11/12/16 Great conditions with lots of fish being caught. Stream level is down to near
normal level for this time of the season. Customers are catching from three to six
steelhead a day right now.
11/19/16 More good reports came in this past week from our customers. There are a
lot of two-salt fish being caught. Swinging, nymphing and egg flies are all producing
well. Perfect Fly Steelhead Flies
11/26/16 More good reports came in the past week. Good numbers of steelhead are
being caught on nymphs and swiinging, mostly nymphs. Stream levels remain good.
12/03/16 Good reports continue to come in from customers. The stream levels are
staying about a normal level and anglers are mostly using steelhead nymphs.
12/10/16 There are a lot of steelhead being caught and many of them are two-salt fish.
Nymphs and eggs are working best but some are being caught swinging.
12/24/16 The river is cold, too cold with lots of snow and ice on the banks and lots of
slush ice in the water. Steelhead are in the river in good numbers, but the water is too
cold to fish.
12/31/16 There is just too much slush ice in the water. It is barely above the freezing
01/07/17 There's still too much ice in the water. Drifting it is out due to ice. We think
you should look for another destination.
01/14/17 No reports of any steelhead being caught. There is still a lot of ice and it will
probably remain until later next week when hopefully, it warms up a little.
01/21/17 There is still too much ice to navigate the river. Wait until it warms some.
01/28/17 The ice is beginning to clear up some, but it is still dangerous and cold. It
should get better soon.
02/04/17 There are reports of fish caught but the river has far too much ice for us to
recommend it to anyone.
02/11/17 The river is blown out, flowing at 6470 at Troy. Watch the levels and fish
as soon as it gets low enough.
02/18/17 The levels are still very high with chances of rain everyday this coming
week. You will just have to watch the levels and fish when it falls back down.
02/25/17 The flows are at 4930 cfs at 5.78. That is high but it is falling fast. Watch
the levels and you should be able to fish soon. We think swinging flies will be the
best option as soon as it gets a little lower.
03/11/17 The stream is flowing at 14,200 cfs at 9.00 feet, or blown out. You will just
have to watch the stream levels.
04/01/17 The stream levels at Troy are 12, 900 cfs at 8.62. Good flows are around
the 5,000 and 6,000 range. It is falling and will get in good shape soon.
04/15/17 The flows are at 8580 cfs at 4.72 ft. which is high, but not too high to fish
from a drift boat. We didn't receive any reports from anyone fishing the past week.
04/22/17 The flows are down to 7760 cfs at 6.92, or much better than last week but
still a little high. It can be fished from drift boats. We didn't receive any reports from
05/06/17 12,800 at 8.60 ft., or double the normal flows. Smallmouth bass fishing
would be great if the stream levels were down but it is way too high to fish.
05/20/17 The stream levels are down to 6640 cfs at 6.49 ft. at Troy and
smallmouth bass fishing excellent. Trout fishing is good in the upper river.
05/27/17 More good reports continue to come in on the Smallmouth bass fishing
and on trout. The discharges and stream levels are much better lately.
06/17/17 The stream levels are in good shape and smallmouth bass and trout are
being caught. Smallmouth are mostly in the lower river.
07/01/17 The stream levels are in good shape and lots of smallmouth bass are
being caught by wading and small boat anglers. There are some trout being
caught in the upper river as well.
08/05/17 We didn't receive any reports from anyone fishing this past week, probably
because of the excessive heat. Smallmouth bass fishing should be good.
08/12/17 The stream levels are running a little below normal and the water warm.
Smallmouth bass fishing is very good. We received two good reports.
08/19/17 Few anglers are fishing but smallmouth bass fishing is red hot.
08/26/17 Two more good reports on smallmouth. The water temperature is still too hot
for trout or steelhead. Crayfish imitations during the day and popper late and early.
09/16/17 The stream levels are still low, about 480 cfs at 3.06 ft. The low levels are
okay for smallmouth bass fishing from the bank or with small boats. Steelhead start
showing up later this month.
09/30/17 The river is running at a normal level for this time of the season. There
are a lot of steelhead migrating up the Snake and fishing in the Grande Ronde will
soon be in high gear. Now is the time to be getting ready for it.
10/08/17 Still no reports of steelhead being caught, but the smallmouth bass
fishing is very good in the lower river. Use poppers early and crayfish patterns
during the day. We received two good reports on the smallmouth this past week.
10/15/17 Finally, some reports of steelhead being caught. They are moving in and it
should only get better. Stream levels are in good shape.
10/21/17 A few more streelhead were caught. Smallmouth bass fishing continues to
be good. The water may be too low for large drift boats.
10/29/17 There are some steelhead and trout being caught. The water is low and
wading easy and safe with cautions. Smallmouth bass fishing is very good.
11/05/17 The river is in good shape with better stream levels and more steelhead
being caught. We received two good reports from customers this past week.
11/20/17 We received two good reports on steelhead being caught. Good
numbers of fish are in the river. Swinging, eggs and nymphing is working.
11/27/17 Stream flows and levels are currently at 2780 cfs at 4.66 ft., which is high.
There are plenty of steelhead in the river. You will just have to watch the levels and
fish when it drops back down.
12/04/17 Stream levels are down some and boats are doing okay, catching
steelhead about one a day on the average. Swinging is working best at this time.
12/11/17 Stream levels are down to near normal levels for a change. Lots of
steelhead are being caught. Our Extaz egg flies and several others are working good.
12/18/17 The stream levels are normal and good numbers of steelhead are being
caught swinging, nymphing and on egg flies.
12/25/17 Stream levels are still in good shape but the water is colder and the
steelhead are becoming a little sluggish but still being caught.
01/01/18 The river is still in good shape with steelhead being caught in fairly good
numbers. Nymphs are working best but swinging is still catching a few.
01/08/18 Good numbers of steelhead are being caught. Conditions are good -
good stream levels and clear water. All methods are working.
01/15/18 Good numbers of steelhead continue to move in from the Snake. Try
nymphing with our steelhead nymphs under an indicator in the slower current..
01/22/18 The stream levels are still high. Large drift boats are fishing it, but it
would be much better if it was lower and according to the forecast, that is unlikely.
02/05/18 The river is high, too high for decent opportunity. It is full of steelhead
and they will be caught as soon as it drops back down.
02/12/18 The river is down a lot from last week but still flowing at about 4000 cfs. It
is best at 2,000 cfs. It will improve as it gets lower. There are lots of steelhead.
02/19/18 The levels are down some but still a little high. The river should continue
to drop and get better each day. There's little to no rain or snow forecast.
02/26/18 The river is down to near normal levels and in good shape. We didn't
receive any reports yet, but you should be able to catch steelhead,.
03/05/18 Stream levels are down to normal and the water is good shape. It is a
little warmer and the steelhead a little more willing.
03/19/18 Good numbers of steelhead are still being caught. Swinging, eggs and
SH nymphs are all working.
03/26/18 The stream levels are running a little above normal. Steelhead are still
being caught in good numbers.
04/02/18 Stream levels are back a little below normal below Troy. Most of the
steelhead are in the Wallowa spawning but a few are being caught in the GR.
04/09/18 The flows are at 10500 cfs at 7.92 ft. Rain is forecast everyday and the
levels are unlikely to come down.
05/01/18 Steelhead season is closed. Trout fishing should be getting good very
soon. There will be some good hatches taking place including the big stoneflies.
05/15/18 Smallmouth bass fishing is good on the lower section of the river. Trout
are being caught on good hatches below Troy. Stream levels are good.
06/19/18 Trout fishing is very good. There are lots of insects hatching. Smallmouth
bass fishing is also good in the lower sections of the river.
07/24/18 The river is low. Smallmouth bass fishing is very good. Some trout are
being caught. There are lots of hatching insects.
08/21/18 The river is very low but fly fishing for smallmouth bass is very good. Fish
up to the roadless area.
09/04/18 Low water levels still exist. Smallmouth bass fishing is good from the state
line up into the roadless area.
