Klamath River Fishing Report - Archive:
11/18/13 So far, only small fish are showing up. Plenty of them being caught in the Iron
Gate vicinity. One customer reported catching several during a three day period.
12/02/13 Customer ordering some steelhead flies reporting he is waiting on
rain. So far, he has been catching some half pounders but that is about it. The adult
fish haven't shown so far.
12/15/13 Plenty of half-pounders but lack of rain and higher water is preventing the
large adult fish from moving in.
01/09/14 We have not received any fishing reports for the Klamath this past
week. Conditions remain pretty good.
01/16/14 Still no hot fishing to report. Some half-pounders still being caught.
01/23/14 Customer ordering more Spey flies reports he has caught a couple of
winter SH this past week.
01/30/14 A few fish are being caught but the recent rain and snow should help the
water level situation.
02/06/14 There is lots of rain on the way and the steelhead fishing should improve.
Water temperatures will also be better.
02/13/14 There are more fish in the river and lots of them are being caught. Two
anglers ordering flies reported some good catching during the past week.
02/20/14 Conditions have remained fairly good. Customers catching decent number
of steelhead on our Perfect Fly nymphs and Spey flies.
02/27/14 Fishing has continued to be very good with lots of steelhead being
caught. With all the rain in the forecast, it should continue to produce except
during very high flows.
03/06/14 Fish below Iron Gate Dam. Much of the river is still muddy. Some
large steelhead are being caught.
03/13/14 The stream levels are back down and the discharges should be
reasonable with excellent fishing opportunities.
03/20/14 Excellent fishing has continued this past week with two customers
reporting catching some nice fish.
03/27/14 Good fishing conditions still exist and much needed rain is in the forecast.
Conditions should improve.
04/03/14 It's all but over for a while for the steelhead. Trout season isn't far off.
09/11/14 Lots of salmon being caught and quota has been reached. Catch and
release only now. Plenty of half pounders in the system. Fishing is good in spite of low
water. Check our salmon flies out.
09/25/14 Plenty of salmon are being caught below the Trinity confluence. It is
still too warm above there.
10/09/14 Not much change has taken place. The salmon fishing has been good
below the Trinity confluence but cooler water temps are needed to move
10/16/14 No great steelhead reports yet but the forecast is calling for some rain
and much cooler weather. Condtions should improve shortly.
10/23/14 It is raining and the steelehead will be moving upstream but so far, not
many are being caught.
Klamath River, California - Fishing Report - September 26, 2018
11/27/14 Anglers are catching some half pounders and some larger adult steelhead.
Our egg flies are working.
12/05/14 Egg flies and swinging streamers are both working. Anglers are catching
plenty of half pounders and some very nice adult steelhead. Good conditions still exist.
12/13/14 Lots of rain, so watch the levels. Customers are reporting they are catching
plenty of steelhead swinging flies. Check out our Perfect Fly Steelhead patterns.
01/01/15 Anglers still catching lots of steelhead. Half pounds and some as large as ten
pound have been reported conditions are good below the Iron Gate dam.
01/08/15 Two more good reports from customers catching steelhead. They are
swinging flies and nymphing.
01/15/15 We received several excellent reports even though the water is a little low
and clear. Nymphing is working the best at this time.
01/22/15 Two more good reports from customers continuing to catch steelhead
this past week.
02/05/15 Conditions are good right now but lots of rain is in the forecast, so keep a
close check on the stream levels.
02/12/15 More good reports of catches came in this past week. Stream levels
were high but fell out fast and more steelhead are being caught.
02/19/15 Conditions remain excellent. Eggs patterns, nymphs and swinging
streamers are all working for our customers.
02/26/15 Great conditions continue. Clear skies and more steelhead being
caught. Good stream levels. The action continues.
03/05/15 Great conditions with lots of steelhead being caught. Good weather and
03/19/15 From the Iron Gate Dam all the way to Highway #5, fishing continues to be
good. Three reports from customers the past two weeks.
03/29/15 More good reports from anglers catching some nice fish came in this past week..
04/23/15 The fishing finally dwindled down to very slow. Sorry for the lack of reports.
05/07/15 No reports from anyone fishing this past week.
05/21/15 Still no reports. Things should pick up by the middle of June.
05/28/15 Shoot us an email and let us help you plan your next trip.
07/02/15 We have had a couple of reports of trout being caught on Golden Stones.
07/16/15 No reports from the past week.
07/30/15 Just a note to say things should start picking up in mid to late August.
8/20/15 Low, warmer than normal water is delaying the Klamath getting it late
summer runs of fish but it should start happening in the near future.
08/27/15 No action or fish showing up so far, but look for the to start arriving in the
lower river within a week or two at the most.
09/03/15 Sorry, but we don't have any good reports for the lower or upper river. Low
water levels. The cooler weather should help to get things rolling.
09/10/15 Not much change. Happy Camp downstream is the best option. Some
salmon coming into the river.
09/17/15 Still dealing with the warm water problems. Not much change from the
previous week, except we can expect slightly cooler temperatures.
10/01/15 A few half pounders are being caught and an occasional fully grown
steelhead. Most of the action is below Happy Camp. It is slow in the upper river.
10/08/15 Not much change has taken place. Downstream of Happy Camp is
about the only option. Later this month is the time to be on the Klamath.
10/15/15 Sorry, not much to report. The temperature should start dropping
down much cooler soon and that will change things fast. Keep in touch.
10/22/15 Steelhead are showing up below the Iron Gate Dam. Flies
Email us for recommendations, address below on your right.
10/29/15 Anglers are catching a few steelhead near Iron Gate but it is still a little
slow. The fishing should continue to improve day to day.
11/05/15 As the past week, there are a few adults being caught near the Iron
Gate but you have to do a little casting to hook one. The "catching" isn't hot but
it isn't cold either.
11/12/15 Same story, second verse. A few steelhead are being caught in the upper
river. The cooler weather has helped but more rain is needed to bring in more fish.
11/19/15 A day's fishing should get you a steelhead around Iron Gate. I guess it is up
to the individual as to whether that's good or not. Rain is still needed to improve it.
11/26/15 Everyone seemed to have higher hopes for the steelhead fishing to pick up
this past week and it did to some extent. Our Veiled Beadhead Crystal Egg steelhead fly
caught a few for two of our regular customers. Conditions are looking better.
12/03/15 Hopefully, the current winter storm will improve the conditions. The stream is
still very low but it is snowing hard and should continue for the next week. Warmer
days should melts some snow and help the color and levels.
12/10/15 Our customers have been catching a lot of steelhead the past few days. They
have moved into the upper river. Heavy rain is coming down now and will continue for
the next few days. It will take some time to clear up.
12/24/15 Lots of steelhead are being caught near the Iron Gate Dam. The lower river
has come down the last few days but still high. There are a lot more fish in the river.
12/31/15 Good conditions exist from Iron Gate to the Interstate. Beaver Creek is
putting some highly stained water in it and it is off color downstream of there.
01/07/16 Fish near the Iron Gate dam. The water gets stained the further you go
downstream. Swinging and nymphing are both working good.
01/14/16 The discharges are still below normal at Iron Gate and conditions are good. It
is difficult predict what may happen within the next week other than there is a lot of rain
to come, as much as 2-3 more inches. Keep a close check on the levels.
01/21/16 It is raining big time and should continue through Friday. The discharges are
likely to be high. Right now that are not that bad.
01/28/16 The flows are down near a normal right now (1900 cfs) but there is a flood
watch in effect the next couple of days and then a lot of snow for the remaining week.
02/04/16 The upper river has been falling and clearing and getting back into good
shape. The lower river has some half pounders and coastal cutthroats coming in.
02/11/16 The discharges from Iron Gate are steady and low enough to provide
good fishing. The water is stained, mostly from runoff of the melting nsow.
02/18/16 The stream levels and discharges are normal and the river in good shape.
There's still some stain but steelhead are being caught swinging and with nymphs.
03/03/16 There are a lot of steelhead below the dam but more should be coming in
with the expectation of higher water levels. There is a lot of rain in the forecast.
03/10/16 The river below Iron Gate is headed up and will most likely be high for a
while. There is a big chance of rain everyday for the next week.
03/17/16 The river has been blown out but is coming back down fast. It is badly
stained in many places. It should be in shape to fish by Friday, maybe.
03/24/16 Most of the steelhead have spawned and left. Trout fishing is limited to
mostly midges and sculpin right now, but will pick up in April.
04/14/16 Good numbers of trout are being caught. Little BWOs, midges, little Black
Caddis and March Browns are hatching. The stream level and flows are fine right now.
04/21/16 The steelhead fishing is done but trout are being caught. The stream levels
04/28/16 We didn't receive any reports from anyone fishing this past week.
05/12/16 Two good reports from customers catching trout. The stream levels are in
better shape and Brown Sculpin streamers are working good. Some little BWO hatches
are taking place but so far, not much surface action.
05/19/16 Conditions remain very good with good levels and lots of trout being caught.
06/02/16 Now that the stream levels have been much better and the weather
warmer, we are getting some very good fishing reports from customers fishing for
trout. There are BWOs, Pale Morning Duns, Golden Stoneflies, Little Yellow stones,
Spotted and Green Sedges or caddisflies, and other insects hatching.
06/09/16 Still getting some good reports on the trout. The weather will cool back
down to normal temperatures this week.
06/23/16 The upper Klamath above the Iron Gate is in good shape and our
customers are catching a lot of trout. Golden stoneflies, little Yellow stoneflies two
species of caddisflies and Pale Morning duns are hatching.
06/30/16 We are also getting some good reports of anglers catching some nice
fish just below the dam. Golden stonefly nymphs, little yellow Stoneflies, Spotted
sedge caddis are working good for the late afternoon egg layers. .
07/07/16 The weather is going to be much cooler this coming week. Trout fishing
should continue to be good above the lake and below the dam.
07/14/16 Good conditions for trout fishing below the dam and above the lake
contiinues. There are still plenty of stoneflies. Little Yellows should be hatching.
07/21/16 The tailwater below the dam and headwaters above the lake continue to
provide some very good trout fishing opportunity. There are several hatches.
07/28/16 We received one good report from a customer catching trout this past week.
08/04/16 Trout fising in the tailwater continues to be good. We received another good
report where early morning streamers and late, near dark caddis action was good.
08/11/16 Few anglers fishing but trout have been very active and insects are hatching
below the dam. It is much rougher on the anglers than the trout. We received two more
good reports this past week. Too many think its strictly a steelhead stream.
08/18/16 No reports of steelhead yet but we are still getting some good reports of
those fishing for trout.
08/25/16 Steelhead are showing up in the lower river. The increased flows are helping.
09/01/16 The weather is much cooler and it is time steelhead begin to show up but so
far, there are no reports. Now is a good time to plan that next trip.
09/08/16 The conditions are good, with good levels and good weather and streelhead
are expected to arrive anytime now. Flows from Trinity and the Iron Gate should get
them up river soon.
09/15/16 Steelhead are coming in the river in decent numbers and consist of some
adults and some half-pounders. This should get better fast and now is the time to make
the plans to fish the river.
09/22/16 There are fish being caught at Happy Camp and some up river. We don't have
any reports of any being caught above the Trinity, so far.
10/06/16 There are plenty of steelhead and salmon in the lower river and steelhead are
moving upstream, some entering the Trinity and others heading on up.
10/13/16 There are plenty of steelhead in the river and the added water from the rain
coming should pull even more fish in and anglers should begin to catch them.
10/20/16 Steelhead are in the river in good numbers thanks to the recent rain. They are
feeding on the salmon eggs and anglers are catching them.
10/27/16 The stream levels below Iron Gate Dam are still low with low discharges. Our
customers are catching good numbers of steelhead. Fishing should remain good for
the next few days.
11/03/16 The stream levels (discharges) are still a little below normal below Iron
Gate, but our customers continue to catch steelhead. Steelhead nymphs under strike
indicators are working best. Swing flies early and late in the day.
11/10/16 Our customers are catching some steelhead and lots of half-pounders.
Flows have been holding steady. Egg flies and steelhead nymphs are producing
best but swinging works with cloud cover.
11/17/16 They have cut down on the discharges and the stream levels are back
down to just below normal levels. We are continuing to get good reports of good
numbers of adult steelhead and half-pounders.
11/24/16 The river is still in good shape with good discharge and stream levels.
Our customers are catching good numbers of adult steelhead and lots of
12/01/16 The stream levels are down a little low and although anglers are still
catching steelehead, the low levels have slowed the action down some.
12/08/16 There are plenty of steelhead in the river but tough to catch due to the low
water conditions. Fish Steelhead nymphs in the bottom of the pools and slow runs.
12/15/16 The river is high right now, but on the way down. There is another round of
heavy rain expected this coming week, so keep an eye on the levels.
12/22/16 The sections below Happy Camp are in bad shape from runoff from the
tributaries. The upper section below Iron Gate is turning out a few fish for the few
12/29/16 The discharges and stream levels from Iron Gate dam are back to normal
and the water in good shape. There are plenty of fish in the river but we didn't receive
any reports from the past week.
01/05/17 The discharges and stream levels are down very low. We still haven't
received a recent fishing report from anyone fishing lately.
01/12/17 The stream levels are a little above normal. They are subject to change, but
currently in good shape. There is another wave of rain coming the first of next week.
01/19/17 The flows are 2680 cfs, or high. Fish above the I-5 bridge. It needs to drop
back down some. Snow is in the forecast every day this coming week.
01/26/17 The discharges and stream levels below Iron Gate are a little low right now.
There is a good weather forecast for the coming week. We received one good report.
02/02/17 The Iron Gate flows are at 1190 cfs at 2.58 feet, which is lower than normal.
There are high wind and high rainfall amounts forecast for the next week. Be certain
to check the weather and flows.
02/16/17 The stream levels is flowing at 3950 at 3.74, a little high but still fishable. This
may be the only stream in the state that can be fished.
02/23/17 The discharges and stream levels below Iron Gate are very high, too high to
fish. The water is stained badly. Everywhere else is worse.
03/02/17 The discharges and stream levels are fine but we didn't receive any reports
from anyone fishing this past week.
03/09/17 The discharges and stream levels at Iron Gate are very high, the water muddy
and the river blown out. The Trinity is in good shape, but check back on this one.
03/16/17 High discharges and stream levels continue to exist.
03/23/17 The discharges and stream levels are even higher than last week and
based on the weather forecast, this situation is unlikely to change.
03/30/17 Flows are still above 3000 cfs. It is falling but is going to take a few days to get
down to normal levels. Keep checking back with us.
04/06/17 The discharges and stream levels are down to just a little above normal
flows. Fishing for rainbows should be good. Skwala stoneflies should be hatching.
04/13/17 The discharges and stream levels are still very high at the Gate, in our
opinion, too high to fish. Keep checking back with us and we will keep you informed.
04/27/17 The flows below Iron Gate are still to high to fish very well. There are
Skwala stoneflies and little Brown stoneflies starting to hatch.
05/04/17 Same story - high discharges and water levels. That makes it tough to
fish. Of course, you can do it and probably catch some trout on streamers but we
don't recommend it.
05/11/17 No changes - high water.
05/18/18 There has been some improvement in the levels but not enough.
05/25/17 The levels are still too high, flowing at 2500 cfs at Iron Gate.
06/01/17 The levels are down a lot, flowing at 1770 cfs at 3.36 ft. We haven't
received any reports from anyone fishing this past week.
06/08/17 The flows are still at 1740 cfs. We still are not getting any reports from
06/22/17 The discharges and stream levels are in good shape below the Iron Gate
dam. Trout fishing should be good but we haven't received any reports from anyone
fishing there lately.
07/27/17 The stream levels below the Iron Gate dam are down and we received our
first good trout fishing report in what seems like a long time. Lots of caddisflies are
hatching and a few little Yellow stoneflies.
08/03/17 The stream levels are still okay and one customer managed to catch
several trout this past week. Few are fishing, most likely due to the hot weather.
08/17/17 We did receive a couple of good reports on trout this past week. PMDs,
little Yellow stoneflies, Spotted sedge and little Sister caddis are hatching.
09/07/17 Good reports are coming in on half-pounders. Some trout are also
being caught. Stream levels are currently running a little low, but okay. Kings are
being caught in the lower river.
09/14/17 The conditions remain about the same. A few half-pounders and trout
are being caught. We didn't receive but one report this past week.
09/21/17 We had two good reports from anglers having a lot of fun with
half-pounders. Trout fishing continues to be good as well.
09/28/17 The river has some salmon and steelhead moving up the river. There
are lots of half pounders being caught.
10/05/17 There are lots of half-pounders being caught and steelhead and
salmon in the middle river. The weather and stream levels are in good shape.
10/12/17 The middle and lower river are turning out good numbers of salmon
and steelhead but so far, only half pounders are in the upper river.
10/19/17 Steelhead are in the upper river and more fish should continue to come in
each day. There are lots of half-pounders and now, some good adult fish.
10/27/19 More adult steelhead are in the river and decent numbers are being
caught. Conditions are very good and should remain good this coming week.
11/03/17 Three good reports from customers catching adult steelhead in the
upper river. There are lot of salmon on redds and SH are eating their eggs.
Some were caught swinging and on nymphs. Stream levels are a little low.
11/10/17 We received two good reports from customers catching steelhead in
the upper river. They are using a variety of methods. Great condiions.
11/17/17 We received two more good reports from customers. The levels are
a little low but plenty of fish are in the river below Iron Gate. Good conditions.
11/25/17 More good reports from customers fishing the past week. Stream
levels remain a little low, but lots of steelhead are still being caught.
12/02/17 Stream levels are up flowing at 1275 cfs. We received two good
reports from customers this past week. Swinging, eggs and steelhead nymphs
12/09/17 The conditions remain good and steelhead are still being caught in
12/16/17 Condition are about as good as they get at this time of the season.
Good numbers of streelhead are being caught. Send us an email for a fly list.
12/30/17 Discharges and stream levels below Iron Gate are low and
steelhead are still being caught. Our steelhead nymphs are working good.
01/10/18 Steelhead are still being caught. The cold water has slowed the action
but it has picked back up some. The stream is still low and the fish scattered.
01/17/18 The discharges and flows are still low but steelhead are still being
caught in good numbers.
01/24/18 Flows are up and our customers are catching lots of steelhead.
Swinging and nymphing methods are both working good right now
01/31/18 Excellent conditions exist with good numbers of fish being caught.
02/15/18 Conditions remain very good.
02/21/18 The stream is still in good shape. The weather and water is going to be
colder but shouldn't have much effect.
02/28/18 The discharges are down to 910 cfs at 1.90 ft, which is ow.
03/07/18 The flows are 698 cfs at 4.51 ft, which is low. The low flows are making
it tougher but steelhead are still being caught. Fish eggs and/or SH nymphs.
03/14/18 The flows are up and the river in good shape below Iron Gate.
Steelhead are being caught in good numbers.
03/21/18 The catches are fewer and there seems to be fewer steelhead but
some are still being caught.
03/28/18 The discharges and stream levels are up and high, making it tough to
fish. A few steelhead are being caught but conditions are not good.
04/04/18 Few fish are being caught. Flows are a little below normal. The run is
about at its end.
04/22/18 The stream levels are in good shape below Iron Gate and trout are
being caught on Blue-winged olives, March Browns and Little Black Caddis.
07/08/18 The river is in good shape and trout are being caught in good numbers
above the lake and below the Iron Gate dam. There are multiple hatches taking
07/22/18 The discharges and levels are usually very good and trout are still
being caught by the few anglers fishing for them.
08/05/18 The stream levels are very low. There are still good hatches taking
place. No reports from anyone fishing this past week.
09/02/18 We are getting some good reports are coming in on half-pounders.
Some trout are also being caught. Stream levels are currently running a little
low, but okay. Kings are being caught in the lower river.
09/26/18 Steelhead are in the system and migrating upstream to the Trinity. Both
nymphing and swinging is producing some good catches for our customers.
