Little Red River, Arkansas - Fishing Report -
October 18, 2016
The stream level is up now but falling. There are plenty of opportunities to fish the
discharge schedule. Our customers did well recently with scuds and sowbugs fished
under an indicator. The cream and light green midge pupa and larva, fished in
tandem, will always get you some trout.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of rain on Wednesday and Thursday,
otherwise clear. Highs will range from 64 to 84 degrees and lows from 46 to 68
Recommended Trout Flies:
Midges: Blood (Red), sizes 20, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Cream, size 20, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Light Green, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Sow Bugs: 16
Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin, size 4/6
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Cinnamon Caddis, size 16/18, larva, pupa and adults
Sandwich Hoppers, Green, 8/10/12
Japanese Beetles, 14/16
Carpenter Ants, 16/18
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
The Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin are good flies to use for the larger size
trout. The Brown and White Belly Sculpin streamers are always a good choice. They
work best under low light conditions or in off color water.
Scuds and Sow Bugs are available for the trout to eat year-round.
Cinnamon Caddis are starting to hatch.
We still think the best strategy is to fish a tandem Midge rig under a small strike
indicator with the midge lava as the bottom fly and the midge pupa as the top fly. Fish
the adult midge only when you observe trout feeding on the surface.
Carpenter ants, Japanese Beetles and Grasshoppers will become more and more
important foods to imitate as the summer goes by.
