Little Red River, Arkansas - Fishing Report -
March 16, 2019
Stream levels are pulsing and mostly high, creams and blood midges (red) are
hatching good. Scuds are also working. Aquatic worms are working. Blue-winged
olives, Winter stoneflies are hatching.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of rain on Wednesday, otherwise
clear for this coming week. Temperatures will range from 59 to 63 degrees and lows
from 38 to 42 degrees.
Recommended Trout Flies:
Midges: Blood (Red), sizes 22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Cream, size 22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Light Green, size 22, larva, pupa and adults
Sow Bugs: 16
Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin, size 4/6
Brown Sculpin, White Belly Sculpin, & Articulated streamers, size 4/6
Aquatic Worms, size 12, pink, red, and others
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
The Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin are good flies to use for the larger size
trout. The Brown, White Belly Sculpin and Articulated streamers are always a good
choice. They work best under low light conditions or in off color water.
Scuds and Sow Bugs are available for the trout to eat year-round.
Aquatic Worms are working good.
We still think the best strategy is to fish a tandem Midge rig under a small strike
indicator with the midge lava as the bottom fly and the midge pupa as the top fly. Fish
the adult midge only when you observe trout feeding on the surface.
