South Holston River, Tennessee - Fishing Report -
January 18, 2017
The water temperature is a little weird for January. It is warmer in the middle and lower
sections of the river than it is near the dam or at the weir dam. That is due to the very
warm weather. That will continue another week, at least. Midges are hatching big time
and little Blue-winged olives hatching often.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of rain everyday from tomorrow though
next Tuesday. Highs will be 54 to 64 and lows from 33 to 50 degrees.
Recommended Trout Flies:
Blue-winged Olives: size 20/18 nymph, emergers, duns and spinners
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Midges: Blood (Red), sizes 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Light Green, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Cream, size 20/22, larva pupa and adults
Winter Stoneflies, size 16 and 18, nymphs and adults
Black Flies, size 18/20, larva, pupa and adults
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
Be sure to check the TVA release schedule shown above. If no turbines are running,
you can wade the stream. If one is running, you can wade the stream in places but
floating it would be the preferred method.
Hatches of various species of Blue-winged Olives are possible in the afternoons and
more likely and in greater quantities if the skies are cloudy or overcast.
Fish the Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin streamers anytime.
Winter stoneflies will start hatching soon.
Black Flies are hatching.
Midges are hatching and will become more and more important as the water gets colder.
