South Holston River, Tennessee - Fishing Report -
March 22, 2020
We continue to get good reports from customers fishing the river when the discharges
and stream levels are reasonable.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of showers every day this week. The
highs will range from 57 to 75 and lows from 45 to 54.
Recommended Trout Flies:
Midges: Blood (Red), sizes 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Cream, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Light Green, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Blue-winged Olives: size 16/18 nymph, emergers, duns and spinners
Brown Sculpin, White Belly Sculpin and Articulated streamers, size 4/6
Aquatic Worms, size 12, pink, red, and others.
Winter Stoneflies, size 16/18, nymphs and adults.
Black Flies, size 18,20, larva, pupa and adults.
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
We still think the best strategy is to fish a tandem Midge rig under a small strike
indicator with the midge lava as the bottom fly and the midge pupa as the top fly. Fish
the adult midge only when you observe trout feeding on the surface.
Be sure to check the TVA release schedule shown above. If no turbines are running,
you can wade the stream. If one is running, you can wade the stream in places but
floating it would be the preferred method.
Hatches of various species of Blue-winged Olives are possible in the afternoons and
more likely and in greater quantities if the skies are cloudy or overcast.
Fish the Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin or the Articulated streamers anytime.
Aquatic worms are working good.
Black flies are hatching.
Winter stoneflies are hatching.
