South Platte River, Colorado - Fishing Report -
October 21, 2016
The canyons, both the Eleven mile and Cheeseman Canyons are turning out a
lot of trout for our customers. Stream levels are good in all sections of the river
but basically low. This makes for easy wading but also easy to spook trout.
Blue-winged olive hatches have been good but there are Tricos, Mahongany
duns, October caddis and others.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is almost no chance of rain for the coming
week. Highs will range from 70 to 81 and lows from 43 to 45 degrees.
Recommended Trout Flies:
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Scuds, size 14 (some areas)
Blue-winged Olives, size 16, 18 nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners
Green Sedges, size 16/14, larva, pupa and adults
Little Yellow Stoneflies, 14/16, nymphs and adults
Spotted Sedges, size 16/14, larva, pupa and adults
Mahogany Duns, size 18, nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners
October Caddis, size 6, nymphs and adults
Sandwich Hoppers, Green, 8/10/12
Japanese Beetles, 14/16
Carpenter Ants, 16/18
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
Our Brown and White Belly Sculpin are great flies to use at this time.
The Olive Matuka and Black Matuka sculpin streamers are good flies to use at this time.
Various species of Blue-winged Olives are hatching.
Scuds are available for the trout to eat year-round.
It is almost alway best to fish a tandem Midge rig under a small strike indicator with the
midge lava as the bottom fly and the midge pupa as the top fly. Fish the adult midge
only when you observe trout feeding on the surface.
Mahogany duns are hatching.
October Caddis are hatching.
Green Sedges, or caddis, are hatching. Spotted sedges are hatching.
Little Yellow stoneflies are hatching in some sections.
Terrestrials, such as ants, beetles and hoppers, are going to become important foods.
