Upper Owens River, California - Fishing Report -
October 13, 2016
The water level is fine and it is clear. Don't let the trout see you. Stay back
away from the banks. If they see you, forget it. Hoppers and hopper droppers
are working great. We had one customer catch over twenty a day last week.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of rain and snow Friday
through Monday, otherwise clear for the next week. Highs will range from 51 to
63 and lows from 40 to 45 degrees.
Recommended Trout Flies:
Rate: 94 cfs
Afternoon Water Temperature: 51
Blue-winged Olives, size 20 and 16, nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Spotted Sedges, size 16/14, larva, pupa and adults
Mahogany Duns, size 18, nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners
Sandwich Hoppers, size 8, 10, 12,
Japanese Beetles, size 16/14
Carpenter Ants, size 16/18
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
Various species of Blue-winged Olives nymphs are still very plentiful. Some of them are
bi-brooded and will be hatching again soon.
Scuds are available for the trout to eat year-round.
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin are great choices for early and late fishing.
Spotted sedges are hatching.
Mahogany duns are hatching.
Terrestrials are playing a big role in food for the trout. Ants, beetles and hoppers will
work and they will become more and more important as the summer goes on.
