Watauga River, Tennessee - Fishing Report - October 19, 2016
They are not running any water today. I'm assuming the lake is low. There has been little
rain lately. That makes wading possible in some sections of the river where it is normally
tough. You can still drift the river in a drift boat, it just adds to the amount of time it takes.
There are some very good Blue-winged olive hatches taking place.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of rain Thursday through Friday, otherwise
clear for the next week. Highs will range from 53 to 82 degrees and lows from 39 to 58
Recommended Trout Flies:
Blue-winged Olives: size 18 and 16, nymph, emergers, duns and spinners
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Cinnamom Caddis, size 16/18, larva, pupa and adults
Green Sedges, size 14/16, larva, pupa and adults
Sulphurs, size 18, nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners
Mahogany Duns, size 18, nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners
Japanese Beetles, 14/16
Carpenter Ants, 16/18
Sandwich Hoppers, Green, 8/10/12
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
There is little change in the best approach to use. Be sure to check the TVA release
schedule shown above. Our Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin are excellent flies to
Hatches of various species of Blue-winged Olives are possible in the afternoons and
more likely and in greater quantities if the skies are cloudy or overcast.
Cinnamon Caddis are hatching. Green sedges, or caddisflies, are hatching.
True Sulphurs are still hatching to some extent.
Mahogany duns are hatching.
Terrestrials such as ants, beetles and hoppers will become important this month.
