White River, Arkansas - Fishing Report -
October 25, 2016
The river is flowing at a good rate and level and our customers are catching good
numbers of trout. All sections of the river are fishing good from the dam to the
lower end that holds trout. Sculpin streamers are catching some big brown trout
and Blue-winged olives are hatching good.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of rain tomorrow, otherwise clear
for the next week. Highs will range from 74 to 79 degrees and lows from 55 to 59
Recommended Trout Flies:
Midges: Blood (Red), sizes 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Cream, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Light Green, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Sow Bugs: 16
Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin, size 4/6
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Cinnamon Caddis, size 16/18, larva, pupa and adults
Japanese Beetles, 14/16
Carpenter Ants, 16/18
Sandwich Hoppers, Green 8/10/12
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
The Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin streamers are good flies to use for the
larger size trout, especially during low light conditions and when the water is running
high or off color. The Brown Sculpin and White Belly sculpin are consistently the best
streamers to use on the White.
Scuds and sow bugs are available for the trout to eat year-round.
We still think a good strategy is to fish a tandem Midge rig under a small strike
indicator with the midge lava as the bottom fly and the midge pupa as the top fly. Fish
the adult midge only when you observe trout feeding on the surface.
Cinnamon caddis should begin to hatch soon.
Terrestrial insects, such as Japanese Beetles, Carpenter ants and grass hoppers will
become more and more important as the summer months go by.
