White River, Arkansas - Fishing Report -
August 15, 2017
They have been running a good bit of water. Drift boats are catching a few
stockers near the dam but the stream flow and levels have made it tough. There
is a change of rain everyday this week, but none appears to be very heavy. We
received one report about 5 days ago.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of rain everyday for the next week..
Highs will range from 82 to 87 degrees and lows from 67 to 73 degrees.
Recommended Trout Flies:
Midges: Blood (Red), sizes 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Cream, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Light Green, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Sow Bugs: 16
Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin, size 4/6
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Spotted Sedges (caddis), size 14/16, larva, pupa and adults
Cinnamon Caddis, size 16/18, larva, pupa and adults
Sulphurs, size 16/18, nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners
Sandwich Hoppers, size 8-12, brown and green
Carpenter Ants, size 18/16, black
Japanese Beetles, size 16/14
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
The Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin streamers are good flies to use for the
larger size trout, especially during low light conditions and when the water is running
high or off color. The Brown Sculpin and White Belly sculpin are consistently the best
streamers to use on the White.
Scuds and sow bugs are available for the trout to eat year-round.
Spotted Sedges, or caddis, are hatching.
Cinnamon Caddis are hatching.
We still think a good strategy is to fish a tandem Midge rig under a small strike
indicator with the midge lava as the bottom fly and the midge pupa as the top fly. Fish
the adult midge only when you observe trout feeding on the surface.
Sulphurs are hatching.
Terrestrials are becoming important - Carpenter ants, Japanese beetles and hoppers
