October 17, 2017
The river is in good shape in all sections. Midges are producing the most fish and
Sculpin streamers the largest fish. You can fish the midges with the larva and
pupa imitations rigged in tandem under a strike indicator.
7 Day Weather Forecast: There is a chance of snow from Friday through
Monday, otherwise clear this coming week. Highs will range from 45 to 64 degrees
and lows from 29 to 39 degrees.
Recommended Trout Flies:
Midges: Blood (Red), sizes 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Light Green, size 20/22, larva, pupa and adults
Midges: Cream, size 20/22, larva pupa and adults
Black Matuka and Olive Matuka Sculpin, size 4/6
Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin, size 6
Blue-winged Olives, size 16 and 18, nymphs, emegers, duns and spinners
October Caddis, size 6, pupa and adults
Spotted sedges, (caddisflies) size 14, 16, lava, pupa and adults
Strategies, Techniques and Tips:
It is almost alway best to fish a tandem Midge rig under a small strike indicator with the
midge lava as the bottom fly and the midge pupa as the top fly. Fish the adult midge
only when you observe trout feeding on the surface. The Olive Matuka and Black
Matuka Sculpin Streamers are good flies to use for the larger trout.
The Brown Sculpin and White Belly Sculpin are great flies to use in the winter season.
Various species of Blue-winged Olives are hatching.
October Caddis are hatching.
Spotted sedge caddis are hatching.
