Small Western Green Drake (Flav)
Spinners:
Spinners usually fall in good numbers but like most spinners, the low floating insects are
difficult to see during low light conditions. Look for them at the bottom end of riffles and
the calmer pockets of faster water. They normally fall from late in the afternoons to just
before dark.
Another way to determine if they have fell is to use a skim type net. A couple of minutes
with the net in the water will tell you. If you are there during the spinner fall, and you
should try to be there, you will see them before they are on the water. The spinner fall
occurs in a short time depending on the sky conditions. Like many spinner falls, cloudy
days are best.
Presentation:
Use an up and across dead-drift presentation of the spinner fly in faster, pocket water
streams. Fish below or at the end of the runs and riffles and the heads of pools. In
smooth streams a down and across dead-drift may be preferred. Long, light leaders and
tippets may be required, even in the low light of smooth water.
