Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the Ashuelot River in
If you fish for the native brook trout in the headwaters you probably only need a four weight
line. There can be some large brown trout in the Ashuelot River. We recommend a 5 weight
and/or a 6 weight line for nymphing and throwing lighter streamers should be all you would
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small dry
flies. Lengths ranging from nine feet up to twelve feet in length are suggested.
Extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X should be available for the leaders we list above.
We suggest either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for each line size you choose to fish. That will
handle about anything you will catch from the Ashuelot River. It should have a medium fast to
fast action and be nine feet in length.
The fly reel you use for the 4, 5 or 6 weight line should be light and have good drags,
preferably disc drags, You don't want to loose a nice trout because of a poor or rough
You would need waders in many places on the Ashuelot River but they are not necessarily
required. We recommend breathable ones.
Felt soles or either the new rubber sole boots would work best.
We would call this optional but is always a good idea. The stream is fairly easy to wade in
We recommend our "Perfect Flies" because they are the best trout flies you can purchase.
Our streamers are very effective on large brown trout. If you haven't already done so, we
hope you will give them a try.
