West Branch of the Ausable River - Gear, Tackle and Flies
The range of trout in the West Branch of the Ausable river, from small brook trout to large
brown and rainbow trout, means you need a variety of gear and tackle to fish it all.
We recommend either a 4, 5 and 6 weight fly line for the West Branch of the Ausable River.
Most of the time you will only need a floating fly line but you also may want some sinking tip
lines and even a sinking line is you fish the deeper pools during cold weather.
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for the respective line size you choose to
use. The fly rod should have a medium fast to fast action and be nine feet in length.
The fly reel used should be for each of the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines you use and each have a
very good drag. We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as well. It
should be smooth. The West Branch of the Ausable River has some large trout and you
don't want to lose one because of a poor drag.
Leaders should size 0X to 6X and be from 7 and a half to 12 feet long. Use shorter leaders
You should have spare tippet in 0X and 6X.
Waders are necessary for fly fishing the West Branch of the Ausable River. We prefer the
breathable type but you may prefer neoprene waders during cold weather.
Wading boots will be needed. Felt soles work best but you may want to consider the new
A landing net would be preferred by most anglers but not absolutely necessary.
