Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Beaverkill River New York
This is another one of those streams you will see some fine bamboo rods on. The average
long time Beaverkill angler probably want agree with our recommendations, but here they
are. Also, keep in mind the Beaverkill is a very long trout stream. It has small brook trout and
large brown trout, so the gear you use depends greatly on what you are going to target. We
will try to cover it all.

Fly Line:
For the small brook trout you will most likely be using small dry flies. The ideal fly line would
be a 4 weight, floating fly line. If you fish for the brown and rainbow trout in the larger portions
of the river, then we suggest something larger. I would say a 5 weight fly line would deliver
most flies that are ideal for most of the fly fishing. If you fish streamers and larger nymphs,
then you should consider using a 6 weight, floating fly line.

Fly Rod:
We recommend a moderately fast to fast action for the 4, 5 and 6 weight fly rods in a nine
foot length.

Fly Reel:
The fly reels should be as light as possible and should have good drags. They should be
smooth operating and adjust to fine increments.

You should probably use at least a 7 1/2 foot leader anywhere you fish.  In some situations
you may need to use a 12 leader. We suggest you have them in sizes ranging from a 0X for
streamers, up to 7X for small dry flies.

You should have extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.

I would not want to fish the Beaverkill without waders, even in the upper sections where the
stream is narrow. You should never wade unless you need to in order to get the fly where you
need to get it but most of the time it will be necessary.

Wading Boots:
Felt soles would be our choice for wading boots.

Wading Staff:
A wading staff would be optional. It certainly doesn't hurt to have one.

We always recommend "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies. We have specific imitations of every
important insect that hatches on the Beaverkill. It is best to use the hatch chart and select the
flies to use for the period of time you will be fishing. Our flies are the most realistic imitations
you can buy as well as the most effective imitations you can buy.
