Fly Fishing Gear for the Big Gunpowder Falls River, Maryland
The tailwater section of this stream has some big brown trout in it, so you don't want
to fish with too light of a fly rod and tippet.
We suggest a 5 weight, floating fly line for most of the fly-fishing. You could use a 4
weight line for dry fly fishing but we don't recommend it. You should use a 6 weight
floating fly line for heavy nymphs and streamers.
The four, five and six weight rod should be nine feet in length. A medium to
moderately fast action would be best.
The reel for the five and six weight rods should have a good drag. You don't want to
hang a large brown trout and loose it because of a poor drag. It should be smooth
and adjust to fine increments.
You should be using at least a 9 foot leader anywhere you fish the Big Gunpowder
Falls River. You should have leaders in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X
for small midge imitations.
Be sure to carry extra tippet material matching your leader sizes ranging from 0X to
We definitely recommend waders because there are few places you can fish from the
Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well. We haven't tried
them in the Big Gunpowder Falls River yet.
We recommend our "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies, not just because we sell them but also
because they are the most realistic and effective flies you can purchase. Our
imitations have proven to be very effective on this tailwater. We have specific
imitations of all the insects in all stages of life that are applicable. The trout in Big
Gunpowder River can be very selective and our flies offer an advantage over
standard, generic imitations.
