Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for Big Hunting Creek

Fly Line:
We recommend a 4 or 5 weight, floating fly line for dry flies and lighter nymphs and a 6 weight
fly floating fly line for heavier nymphs and streamers.

Your leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for midges and small
dry flies. You should carry them in lengths ranging from seven and one-half feet, up to 12
feet in length. Nine foot would probably be the most used length.

You should have extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X.

Fly Rods:
The rods for the 4, 5 or 6 weight lines should be a medium fast to fast action rod. We think
nine foot is the best length.

Fly Reels:
The reels for the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines should have a good drag, preferably a disc drag.
You don't want to loose a nice brown trout because of a poor or rough operating drag.

Waders are necessary for fly fishing Big Hunting Creek.

Wading Boots:
Felt sole wading shoes are illegal in Maryland and you need to use caution as to which
wading boots you trust.

Trout Flies:
We recommend Perfect Fly trout flies. We have imitations of all the major insects,
crustaceans, sculpin and baitfish that exist in Big Hunting Creek. The  wild brown trout can be
rather picky and selective and our more realistic imitations give you a added advantage. We
hope you will give our Perfect Flies an opportunity to work for you. .
