Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Big Thompson River
We recommend a 4 weight, floating fly line, or an even lighter fly line, for the small
cutthroat and brook trout in the headwaters. We recommend a 5 weight, floating fly
line for dry flies and light nymphs for the trout in the other sections of the river. We
prefer a 6 weight floating fly line for heavier nymphs and streamers. You may also
consider a sinking tip line for streamers.
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for small dry flies.
Lengths ranging from seven and one-half feet up to 12 feet in length are suggested.
Short leaders work great in the fast water where short cast are necessary.
You should have plenty of extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X.
For the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines we suggest a medium fast to fast action in a nine foot
The fly reels you use for the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines should be light and should
have good drags that can be adjusted in fine increments.
We recommend waders anywhere you choose to fish the Big Thompson River. We
prefer the breathable type but you may want to consider Neoprene waders for cold
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots. You may want to consider the new
rubber sole boots that help prevent the spread of Didymo. We haven't tested them
on this river.
A wading staff would be purely optional. You should consider using one during high
water or in stronger currents that are suitable for wading.
A landing net is another optional item.
As always, we recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. If you haven't already done so,
please give our "Perfect Flies" a try. They are the most realistic and effective trout
flies you can purchase. We have imitations of all aquatic and terrestrial insects and
crustaceans, baitfish and sculpin. We have fly patterns for the aquatic insects in all
stages of life. We suggest you use our "Perfect Fly" hatch chart and select your flies
from it or email or call us for help.
