Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for Big Wilson Creek
You will probably enjoy using a light fly line to catch the brook trout. Certainly you will be
using mostly small and most likely, dry flies for the brook trout. We would say the ideal fly
line size would be a 4 weight, floating fly line. If you fish heavy nymphs and small streamers,
you may prefer a 5 weight fly line to deliver the larger flies. A 6 weight line would be best for
fishing larger size streamers and large nymphs.
Depending on which fly line sizes you prefer, then you would want a fly rod for each line size
you chose. The four, five and six weight fly rods should be nine feet in length with a medium
fast to fast action.
The reels for the four, five and six weight fly rods should be as light as possible and have
You should probably be using at least a 7 and one half foot leader. Most of the time you
would probably want to use a 9 foot leader. I would suggest having them in sizes ranging
from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry fly imitations in both the 7and one half and nine
Make sure you have plenty of extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.
Waders would be necessary for the Big Wilson Creek unless it is warm enough for you to
wet wade. We recommend the breathable type.
Most of the bottom is rock. You would not want cleats. Felt soles are the best. We haven't
tried the new rubber soles on this stream yet, but we would think they would work just fine.
There is little algae in the stream.
A landing net would be a purely optional item.
Much of the bottom in either gravel, sand or rock. You would not want cleats. Felt soles are
the best. We are testing the new rubber soles out and have no comment about them yet.
A landing net is optional but recommended.
A wading staff is recommended if the water is high.
Naturally we recommend "Perfect Flies". We think they are the best flies you can purchase.
We have both specific imitations of all the insects and other trout food as well
as low priced, but high quality generic and attractor trout flies.
