Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Boulder River
We recommend either a 4, 5 and 6 weight fly lines for the Boulder River in Montana.
You only need a floating fly line. You may want a sinking tip line for the lower section
during colder weather.
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod for the respective line size you choose
to use. The 4, 5 and 6 weight fly rods should have a moderately fast to fast action. We
think nine foot is the best length fly rod.
The fly reel used should be for each of the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines you use and each
should have a very good drag. We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will
work as well. It should be smooth.
Leaders should be sizes 0X to 6X and be from 7 and a half to 12 feet long. Use shorter
leaders for streamers.
You should have spare tippet from 0X to 6X. Some anglers prefer fluorocarbon but
mono is fine.
Waders are necessary for fly fishing the Boulder River. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading boots will be needed. Felt soles work best but you may want to consider the
new rubber soles.
A landing net would be preferred by most anglers but its not absolutely necessary.
Perfect Flies are recommend because they are the best trout flies you can purchase.
We have specific imitations of everything that hatches in all stages of life that trout exist
in the Boulder River. We also have a fine selection of quality generic and attractor flies
at very low prices. If you haven't already tried Perfect Flies, we certainly hope you will
give them a try.
