Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Clear Creek
If you want to enjoy the small trout in the headwaters streams you may want to use a light
fly line to catch them. Certainly you will be using small and most likely, dry flies for the
small brook trout and cutthroat trout. We would say the ideal fly line size would be a 4
weight, floating fly line but you could use an even lighter line.
A 5 weight fly line would deliver the flies that are ideal for most of the fly fishing the main
Clear Creek. If you fish streamers and nymphs, then we would suggest you go to a 6
weight line. You may want to consider using a sinking tip line for streamers.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above fly line sizes you choose to use. The
length of the 4, 5 and 6 weight rods should be nine feet in our opinion. We think a medium
fast to fast action would be best for the rods.
The reels for the 4, 5 and 6 weight fly lines should be light and have good drags. They
should adjust in fine increments.
You should probably be using at least a 7 1/2 foot leader anywhere you fish Clear Creek
unless you are fishing streamers. You should have leaders ranging in sizes ranging from
0X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry flies. There are times and places a 12 foot leader
may be needed.
You would want to have extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders are necessary. We prefer the breathable type but you may need neoprene
waders if you are fishing during the winter.
Felt soles would be our first choice.
We would call a wading staff an optional item that you may want to consider.
We recommend our "Perfect Fly" Trout Flies. We have specific imitations of every
important aquatic insect that hatches on Clear Creek. If you haven't already done so, we
invite you to try our "Perfect Flies". We are confident you'll be glad you did. They are the
most realistic and effective imitations you can purchase.
