Fly Fishing Gear for the Clyde River Vermont

Basic Gear:
Gear greatly depends on the species of fish you are trying to catch and the area of water you
are fishing. The brook trout are quite large but not near the size and strength of the
landlocked salmon or the larger brown trout.
Fly Line:
We suggest a floating, 4 or 5 weight line for the brook trout. You may also want a 6 weight fly
line for the browns and landlocked salmon. The 6 weight fly line could also have sinking tips
added to help with the streamer fishing for salmon.
Leader:
For salmon and streamer fishing a 2X or 3X leader, 7 and a half foot long would be
appropriate. If you fish for the browns, you will want 4X and 5X leaders that are 9 foot long.
For the brook trout and rainbow trout, in addition, carry some 6X leaders.
Tippet:
You should have tippet material to match the leader sizes above ranging from size 2X up to
size 7X.
Fly Rods:
For streamer fishing for the salmon and brown trout, we suggest a #6 weight, 9 foot, medium
fast to fast action rod. For dry fly and smaller nymph fishing for the rainbows and brook trout,
a #4 or #5 weight, 8 to 9 foot, medium to medium fast action fly rod would be best.
Fly Reels:
Reels to hold line for the above line size recommendations should have a good, smooth disc
drag. The large browns, rainbows, and landlocked salmon can strip line easily. Even the large
brook trout can make you wish you had a good drag.
Waders:
Waders are optional. Several types of fishing can be done from the banks as well as small
boats and canoes.
Wading Boots:
We suggest felt sole wading boots for the Clyde River.
Flies:
You will need a good selection of streamers for the salmon. Traditional streamers work fine.
For the brook trout we suggest you check out the
hatch chart for the time you will be fishing
the Clyde River and select imitations to match what is about to hatch or what will be hatching
when you are there.
