Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Flies for the Dead River Maine
A four, five or six weight-forward, floating fly line is usually the line sizes you will need to fish
the Dead River. Sinking tip and sinking fly lines are also used in the early and late part of
the season. You could get by using only a 5 weight.
We recommend you carry leaders ranging from 9 feet to 12 feet long, in sizes ranging from
2X to 6X. You may also want some shorter leaders for streamer fishing.
Spare tippet material should be on hand for the above size leaders from 2X to 6X.
The fly rod for the 4, 5 or 6 weight line should be a nine foot, in a medium to medium fast
The fly reel should have a good drag and be as light as possible.
Waders are preferred although you may be fishing mostly from a canoe. There are times
they will come in handy. We prefer the breathable type.
Felt bottom wading boots are recommended although the new rubber soled wading boots
may work fine.
A landing net is purely an optional item.
We recommend our own "Perfect Flies" because they are the most realistic and effective
imitations of the Dead River's aquatic insects and other trout food you can purchase. We
have specific imitations of all stages of life of the insects and a full line of our own terrestrial
patterns. We also have many different salmon flies. If you haven't already tried them, we
certainly hope you will. You will not be disappointed.
