Fly Fishing The Feather River California
The Feather River is a tailwater of Lake Oroville and one
of California's best steelhead streams. The Middle and
North Fork sections of the Feather River are covered
under different Stream Sections of this website. The river
also has a Spring salmon run. The large Chinook Salmon
range from ten to twenty-five pounds and up to forty
pounds.
During October and November you will find steelhead
holding behind salmon redds waiting for dinner. The
Feather River's steelhead fishing is quite productive. It is
one of the best streams in the nation for catching
numbers of steelhead. You may hook and land several
steelhead in a day. Catching as many as ten steelhead in
a day of fly fishing the Feather River isn't uncommon. The
average Feather River steelhead probably weighs five
pounds but some will go up to ten pounds.
There's a run of half pounders during the Spring. These
steelhead feed mostly on mayfly nymphs and caddis
larvae. The best fishing for the half pounders is from
about the middle of March through the month of April. It is
also possible to catch these small steelhead on dry flies.
This river also has a good shad run from April until July.
Striped Bass show up in March and are present until
June. Fly fishing the Feather River for Striped Bass and
Shad is also very good.
Seasons:
The season is open year-round but is species dependent.
There is a specific Salmon fishing season
Spring:
March and April are best for the half pounder run.
Summer:
Salmon can be taken beginning in mid-July through
October.
Fall:
October is the beginning of the steelhead season. Mid
October is the peak of the season.
Winter:
The early part of November is also a prime month for
Steelhead fishing. Fishing continues through the Winter.
