Fly Fishing Gear for the Firehole River (YNP)
You need fly fishing gear for the Firehole River ranging from light gear for the brook trout
in the headwaters to heavier gear for streamers and nymphs for the rainbows and brown
trout.

Fly Line:
We recommend floating, weight forward fly lines ranging from a 4 weight or less for the
brook trout in the headwaters, or a 5 weight for nymphing and streamers. A five weight fly
line would deliver most of the flies you would normally use.

Leaders:
You should have leaders ranging from a 9 foot tapered leader to a 12 foot length in sizes
from 1X for streamers up to a 6X for small dry flies. You may also want some shorter
streamer leaders.

Tippet:
Carry tippet ranging in sizes from 1x to 6X.

Fly Rod:
The fly rod for the 4 weight line should be nine feet long in a medium fast to fast action.
Like the four weight, the five weight fly rod should be nine feet long to assist in casting in
the wind that is normal for the park. It would be best in a medium fast to fast action. The six
weight should be nine feet long in a medium fast to fast action.

Fly Reel:
Reels for the lines sizes you choose to use in the 4 weight line should be light but that is
about the only requirement. Fly reels for the five weight lines should be light weight and
have good drags. We prefer disc drags.

Waders:
Waders are definitely recommended. We prefer the breathable type but you could use the
neopreme type if you fish very early and late in cold weather.

Wading Boots:
Felt soled wading boots are still our choice for the Firehole River. We will be testing the
new rubber sole wading boots in this stream but have no recommendation as of now.

Landing Net:
A landing net is recommended, but not absolutely necessary.

Trout Flies:
Keep in mind, the Firehole River is a very clear flowing stream with lots of smooth flowing
water. The surface can be slick in places and appear easy to fish, but the currents can be
very deceptive. Getting drag free drifts isn't easy in many areas of the river. The trout can
become extremely selective on certain insects and refuse anything that isn't a good
imitation of the particular insect they are feeding on at the time. That's when our customers
learn that our files are superior to all others.

Our "Perfect Flies" are the best flies you can buy for the Firehole River. We have flies that
match every terrestrial and aquatic insect in all stages of life. They are the most realistic
and effective trout flies you can purchase. If you haven't done so already, please give them
a try. You will be glad you did.
