Fly Fishing Gear for the Gardner River - Yellowstone National Park
Fly Line:
The only fly line you probably need for fishing the Gardner River is a 5 weight forward, floating
line. You may also want a 6 weight floating line to fish nymphs and streamers. If you fish the
headwaters and small stream tributaries, you may prefer to use a 4 weight fly line.

Fly Rod:
You would want a fly rod to handle each of these three line sizes.  The four and five weight
rods would be ideal at a length of nine feet. We think a medium fast to fast action would be
best for this one.

The six weight rod should be nine feet in length in a medium fast to fast action.

Fly Reel:
The reels for the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines should have good drags. The drags should be smooth
and adjust to fine increments.

Leaders:
You should be using at least a seven foot leader. A nine foot length would probably be the
best all around length. The only exception would be when you are fishing streamers whereas
you may want a short leader or only 3 or 4 feet.. Make sure you have leaders in sizes ranging
from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for midges and other small flies.

Tippet:
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.

Waders:
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the Gardner River even though you can
cast across it in most places. We prefer the breathable type.

Wading Boots:
Felt soles would still be our choice. The new rubber soles may work okay. They have at other
similar waters where we've tried them.

Wading Staff:
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory. The current can run strong at times
and in certain areas of the stream.

Landing Net:
A landing net would be purely optional for the Gardner River. In the fall, when large brown trout
are in the river, you may wish you had one.

Trout Flies:
We always recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We have specific imitations of every
important insect that exist in the Gardner River. It is best to use the hatch chart and select the
flies to use for the period of time you will be fishing. We have imitations of everything trout eat
in the Gardner River and many have been tested and proven effective there.
