Fly Fishing Gear for the Gibbon River (YNP) Wyoming
You need gear ranging from light line for the brook trout, to heavier line for streamers and
nymphs. You could get by with a five weight outfit for just about everything if you needed
to. There wouldn't be anything wrong with using a 3 weight outfit in the upper headwaters
but we aren't recommending anything under a 4 weight outfit.
We recommend fly lines ranging from a 4 weight or less for the brook trout in the Upper
Meadows, to a six weight for nymphing and streamers. A five weight fly line would deliver
most of the flies you would normally use, but a 6 weight would be better for nymphs.
You should have leaders ranging from a 9 foot tapered leader to a 12 foot in sizes from 2X
for streamers up to a 6X for midges and tiny flies. You may want some shorter streamer
Carry tippet ranging in sizes from 1x to 6X.
The fly rod for the 4 weight line, or lighter rod, should be eight to eight and a half feet long,
in a slow to medium taper. The five weight fly rod should be nine feet long to assist in
casting in the wind normal for the park, in a medium to medium fast action. The six weight
should be nine feet long in a medium fast action with a stiffer tip for nymphing.
Reels for the lines sizes you choose to use in the 4 or smaller sizes, should be light but that
is about the only requirement. Reels for the five and six weight lines should be light weight
and have good drags.
Waders are definitely recommended. We prefer the breathable type but you could use the
neopreme type in very cold weather.
Felt soled wading boots are our choice. We are testing the new rubber sole wading boots
but have no recommendation as of this date.
A landing net is recommended, but not necessary.
Our "Perfect Flies" are the best ones you could possibly use for the Gibbon River. The
trout in the meadow sections of the Gibbon River can be difficult to catch and extremely
selective at times. We have flies to match every terrestrial and aquatic insect in all stages
of life. If you haven't done so already, please give them a try. You will be glad you did.
