Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Green River, Flaming
The Green River has some large trout. You don't want to use too light of tackle. The ideal
fly line size would probably be a 5 weight, floating fly line. Some anglers would prefer
something heavier for large nymphs, streamers and the large trout. A 6 weight fly line
would deliver most of the streamers and heavy nymphs better than the 5 weight. You may
want to use a sinking tip line for the streamers.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes if you chose to use them.
The five and six weight rods would be ideal at a length of nine feet. We think a medium fast
to a fast action is best.
The reels for the 5 or 6 weight lines should have good drags. It should be smooth and
adjust to fine increments. You don't want to hook one of the Green River's big rainbows
and end up with a broken tippet because you had a less than adequate fly reel.
You should be using at least a 7 1/2 foot leader anywhere on this River. There are cases
where you may want a 12 foot leader. The only exception would be when you are fishing
streamers. You may want a shorter leader in that case. Make sure you have leaders in
sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small flies.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the Green River. We prefer the
breathable type but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing during the winter.
Felt soles would be our choice.
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory.
You probably shouldn't be fishing the Green River without a landing net.
We recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We have specific imitations of every important
insect that exist in the this river, in each stage of its life that's applicable to fishing. It's best
to use the hatch chart and select the flies to use for the period of time you will be fishing.
These trout can be rather selective. We have several customers who regularly fish the
Green River using our flies. If you haven't already done so, we hope you will give them an
opportunity to work for you.
