Hat Creek Fly Fishing Guide - Gear, Tackle and Flies
Hat Creek has some large rainbow trout and brown trout, so you don't want to go too light on
your tackle.
Fly Line:
We recommend either a 5 or 6 weight floating fly line. You may want a sinking tip line for
streamers but a floating line works just about for all the fishing.
Fly Rod:
We recommend either a 5 weight fly rod in a medium to medium-fast action that is 9 feet in
length. The 6 weight fly rod should be a medium fast to fast action rod with a slightly stiffer
tip for nymph fishing and 9 feet in length.
Fly Reel:
The fly reel used should be for either the 5 or 6 weight line should have a very good drag.
We prefer disc drags but there are other types that will work as well.
Leaders:
Leaders should be a size 1X to 7X and range from 8 to 15 feet in length. Long leaders are
often required.
Tippet:
You should have spare tippet in 1X to 7X. Some anglers prefer fluorocarbon for nymphs but
mono is fine.
Waders:
Waders are needed for fly fishing Hat Creek. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading Boots:
Wading boots should either by felt soles or the new rubber soles if you prefer.
Landing Net:
A landing net is strictly optional but we do recommend using one.
Trout Flies:
Perfect Flies really prove their net worth fly fishing Hat Creek. We have several California
customers who regularly fish this spring creek that use our flies and for darn good reasons.
They closely imitate all the real aquatic insects, crustaceans and terrestrials that are in the
stream. In short, they catch trout in Hat Creek when other flies don't. They are the most
realistic trout flies you can buy.
