Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies - Hoback River
We recommend as light as a 4 weight, floating fly line, or an even lighter fly line, for the
small trout of the Hoback River. A 5 weight, floating fly line for dry flies and light nymphs
is preferred by most anglers. We prefer a 6 weight floating fly line for heavier nymphs
and streamers during the spawning runs from the Snake River and for streamers and
large stonefly nymphs.
Leaders should range in sizes from a 1X for streamers up to a 7X for small dry
flies. Lengths ranging from seven and one-half feet up to 9 feet in length are
suggested. Short leaders work great in the fast water where short cast are necessary.
Short leaders also need for streamers.
You should have plenty of extra tippet material ranging from 1X to 7X.
For the 4 weight line, or lighter if you prefer, we suggest a four weight medium slow or
medium action fly rod from eight to eight and one-half feet in length. For the 5 weight
line, we would recommend a medium to medium fast action fly rod, depending on your
preference. It should be from eight and one-half feet up to nine feet long. The 6 weight
fly rod should be a little stiffer for nymph fishing. We suggest a nine foot, medium fast to
fast action rod for it.
The fly reel you use for the 4 weight line (or even lighter) should be light but thats
about the only requirement. The reels for the 5 and 6 weight lines should have good
drags that can be adjusted in fine increments.
We recommend waders anywhere you choose to fish the Hoback River. We prefer the

A wading staff is recommend for high water but not required.
A landing net is another optional item.
We recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. If you haven't already done so, you should give
"Perfect Flies" a try. They are the most realistic and effective trout flies you can
purchase. They have proven successful on the Hoback River trout. We have imitations
of everything that hatches in the Hoback River. Our realistic stonefly nymphs have
proven very effective on this stream as well as many of our other flies.
