Fly Fishing Gear for the Jackson River Virginia
Fly Line:
A four or five weight, floating fly line is the best choice for fishing dry flies on the Jackson
River. A six weight, floating fly line will work better for larger nymphs and streamers. A
sinking tip fly line works great during periods of cold water.
Leaders:
We recommend you carry leaders ranging from 9 feet to 12 feet long, in sizes ranging from
0X to 6X. You may also want some shorter leaders for streamer fishing.
Tippet:
Spare tippet material should be on hand for the above size leaders from 0X to 6X.
Fly Rod:
The fly rod for the 4 or 5 weight line should be a 4 or 5 weight, eight and one-half to nine
foot, medium action fly rod. The rod you use for the six weight line for streamers and larger
nymphs should be 6 weight, nine foot, medium fast action rod in our opinion. We also
recommend a slightly stiffer tip for nymph fishing.
Fly Reel:
The fly reels should be as light as possible for the appropriate size fly lines but they all
should have good drags. We prefer disc drags. You don't want to hook a large brown trout
and lose it because of a poor fly reel drag.
Waders:
Waders are necessary unless you are fishing during the summer and wet wading. We
prefer the breathable type but you may want neopreme wader if you fish during the winter.
Wading Boots:
Felt bottom wading boots are recommended. We have not tested the new rubber soles on
this stream.
Landing Net:
A landing net is recommended but it's a purely optional item.
Trout Flies:
We recommend our own "Perfect Flies" because they are the most realistic and effective
imitations of the things trout eat that you can purchase. We suggest you have the flies
necessary to match the insects during the time you plan on fishing the Jackson River.
