Fly Fishing Jerry's Run Virginia
Jerry's Run is a small, freestone stream in the
Alleghany Highlands of Virginia near West Virginia that
holds some good rainbow trout in its upper area and
some native brook trout in its remote areas. It is stocked
twice a year by the state. I'm not certain if other species
are stocked. We have only caught rainbows the one
and only time we stopped to fish it. Its a beautiful, slate
bottom stream that runs at a gradual decline. There are
native brook trout in its upper section but you have to
do a fair amount of hiking to reach them. About four
miles of its water isn't accessible by road.
The stream is not far off I-64 on Forest Service Road
#198. The road runs along the stream. The upper part
is heavily fished after it is stocked. You probably
wouldn't have to go far on Jerry's Run Trail to find some
good native brook trout water. We just didn't take the
time to do that.
The stream flows through National Forest Land so there
isn't any access problems other than your lack of
willingness to hike. The maps show several small feeder
streams flowing into Jerry's Run and I would think they
would also have brook trout. Fly fishing Jerry's Run in
the area we fished was a lot of fun and we did catch a
few rainbows in a very short time. We did notice a lot of
man created trash and beer cans along the upper part
of the stream. Its a shame people will do that to such a
beautiful little mountain stream. We were short of time,
or I would have liked to have hiked back into the native
brook trout country. I have an idea that is not done very
often although Jerry's Run Trail is a popular hiking
destination.
Season:
The season runs year-round
Winter:
My guess is most winter days it would be tough fishing.
Spring:
Spring is the best time for fly fishing Jerry's Run.
Summer:
Summertime would be okay if you were after the brook
trout in the shaded areas of the stream.
Fall:
Fall is a beautiful time to fish the Alleghany Highlands.
