Fly Fishing Gear for the Kennebec River Maine
Fly Line:
Some anglers may prefer a 4 weight fly line if they are fishing only for brook trout but we
don't recommend it because some of them are quite large and at times, you also never
know when a large landlocked salmon may take your fly. A five weight forward floating fly
line would be your best choice. Some anglers like to use a 6 weight for the salmon, large
brown and rainbows. This size line works best for streamers and large nymphs. You may
also want a sinking tip line or a sinking fly line for the early Spring and late Fall salmon
season for streamers.
Leaders:
We recommend you carry leaders ranging from 9 feet to 12 feet long, in sizes ranging from
0X to 6X. You may also want some shorter leaders for streamer fishing.
Tippet:
Spare tippet material should be on hand for the above size leaders from 0X to 6X.
Fly Rod:
The rod for the 5 weight line should be a nine foot, medium to medium fast action fly rod.
The rod you use for the six weight line for streamers and larger nymphs should be 6
weight, nine foot, medium fast action rod. We also recommend a slightly stiffer rod tip for
nymph and streamer fishing.
Fly Reel:
The fly reels should be as light as possible for the appropriate size fly lines but they all
should have good drags. We prefer disc drags. You don't want to hook a large trout or
salmon and lose it because of a poor fly reel drag.
Waders:
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you would fish. We prefer the breathable type.
Wading Boots:
Felt bottom wading boots are recommended. We have not tested the new rubber soles on
this stream.
Landing Net:
A landing net is recommended although it isn't absolutely necessary.
Trout Flies:
We recommend "Perfect Flies" for the Kennebec River because they are the most realistic
and effective imitations of the things trout eat that you can purchase. We suggest you have
the flies necessary to match the insects that hatch during the time you plan on fishing the
Roach River. You should also have streamers that match smelt and small baitfish. You will
need both nymphs and dry flies most days of the season.
