Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Flies for the Kern River, California
The Kern River is a very diverse river. It's North Fork, South Fork and Tailwater sections are
very different. The flies, gear and tackle you need depends largely on where you fish and
what species your fishing for.
We recommend either a 4, 5 or 6 weight floating fly line for most of the rainbow and brown
We recommend a medium fast to fast action fly rod for the 4, 5 and 6 weight fly lines that is 9
feet in length.
The fly reels used for the 4, 5 or 6 weight rods should have very good drags. We prefer disc
drags but there are other types that will work as well.
Leaders should be a size 0X to 6X and range from 7 1/2 to 12 feet in length.
You should have spare tippet in 0X to 6X.
Waders are necessary in most places. We recommend the breathable type.
Wading boots can be rubber or felt. We prefer felt.
A landing net is strictly optional but we do recommend using one in the North Fork and
Tailwater section. You may hook a large trout and really regret not having one.
Perfect Flies have proven to be very effective on the Kern River. We have several California
customers who regularly use our flies on this stream. They closely imitate all the real aquatic
insects, crustaceans and terrestrials that are found on and in the stream. We have specific
imitations of all the insects in all stages of life. If you haven't already tried them, we certainly
hope you will. We are confident you will find them highly effective. Give us a call or email and
we can help you make your selections.
