Fly Fishing Tackle, Gear and Trout Flies for the West Fork of the
Kickapoo River in Minnesota
The West Fork of the Kickapoo River is really a relatively small trout stream that is easy to
wade and fairly easy to fish. The wild trout brook, brown and rainbows. The browns can go up
to eighteen and larger. Rainbows are stocked in its lower sections.
For most of the fishing you will encounter, we think a 4 or 5 weight floating line would be the
best choice. You may also want a 6 weight floating line to fish nymphs and streamers.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes you choose to use. The fly
rods should be nine feet in length for the best performance. A medium fast to fast action works
The reels for the four, five or six weight lines should have good drag systems. The drags
should be smooth and adjust to fine increments.
A seven and one-half foot leader or nine foot length would probably be the best all around
lengths. You may also want a twelve foot length for fishing small dry flies in the smooth
sections of water. The only other exception would be when you are fishing streamers whereas
you may want a short leader of only 3 or 4 feet. Make sure you have leaders in sizes ranging
from 0X for streamers up to 6X for midges and other small flies.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the West Fork of the Kickapoo River. Little
fishing can be done from the banks. We prefer the breathable type but you may prefer the
neoprene type if you fish during the very cold parts of the season.
Felt soles would still be our choice. The new rubber soles may work okay. We haven't tested
them in the Kickapoo River.
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory.
A landing net would be purely optional.
We recommend our "Perfect Flies" over any of the generics. We have specific
imitations of everything that hatches on the Kickapoo River and in all stages of life that's
applicable to trout fishing. We also have imitations of crustaceans, sculpin minnows and
baitfish. If you haven't done so already, please give them a try. You will be glad you did.
