Fly Fishing Gear for the Lamar River - Yellowstone National Park
Remember that the Lamar River can become stained when there are thundershowers in its
upper sections even though it may not be raining where you fish. For that reason, we think it is
a good idea to have a nymph and streamer setup available even though you can catch trout
on the dry fly most all of the time.
You could easily get by using a five weight forward or double tapered floating fly line for all of
the fishing in the Lamar River but most anglers would prefer to have a variety of lines. You may
also want a 6 weight floating line to fish nymphs and streamers.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the line sizes above if you choose to use both of
them. The five weight rods would be ideal at a length of nine feet. Longer rods work better in
the winds normal in the meadows. The five and six weight rods should be nine feet in length in
a medium fast to fast action.
The reels for the five and six weight lines should be light and have good drags. The drags
should be smooth and adjust to fine increments. There are some 18 inch trout in the Lamar
A nine foot leader length would probably be the best all around length. You may also want a
twelve foot length for fishing small dry flies in the smooth sections of water. The only other
exception would be when you are fishing streamers whereas you may want a short leader of
only 3 or 4 feet. Make sure you have leaders in sizes ranging from 1X for streamers up to 6X
for midges and other small flies.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.
Waders are necessary for fishing the Lamar River. We prefer the breathable type.
Felt soles would still be our choice. The new rubber soles may work okay. We haven't tested
them in the Lamar River.
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory. The stream is fairly easy to wade.
A landing net would be purely optional.
We recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We have specific imitations of everything insect that
exist in the Lamar River. Many of our flies have been tested and proven to work in this stream.
If you haven't done so already, we hope you will give them an opportunity to work for you. We
feel confident that you will be glad you did.
