Fly Fishing Gear for Lava Creek (YNP) Wyoming
The trout above the falls in Lava Creek are mostly brook trout rarely exceeding ten inches.
Those in the lower section of the stream below the falls are cutthroat, brook, brown,
rainbow and cutbow trout.

Fly Line:
We recommend a 4 or 5 weight forward, floating fly line. You would probably prefer a 5
weight fly line below the falls.

Leaders:
You should have leaders ranging from a 71/2 foot to a 9 foot tapered leader in sizes
ranging from 3X for larger flies up to a 6X for small flies.

Tippet:
Carry tippet material ranging in sizes from 3x to 6X.

Fly Rod:
Our preferences would be as follows: The fly rod for the 4 and 5 weight line should be nine
feet long in a medium fast to fast action.

Fly Reel:
The fly reels should be light. A clicker drag is fine for the brook trout, but you should have
a good, smooth drag on the reels used below the falls.

Waders:
Waders are required but recommended for Lava Creek, especially in the lower section of
the stream. We prefer the breathable type.

Wading Boots:
Felt soled wading boots are our choice. We are testing the new rubber sole wading boots
but have no recommendation as of this date.

Landing Net:
A landing net is purely optional but suggested for the large brown trout during the
spawning run.

Trout Flies:
Our "Perfect Flies" are the best choice for Lava Creek. We have flies to match every
terrestrial and aquatic insect in all stages of life as well as generic and attractor flies. If you
haven't done so already, please give them a try. You will be glad you did.
