Hatches and Trout Flies for Bushkill Creek Pennsylvania
Being a limestone stream, Bushkill Creek has several good aquatic insect hatches. When
something is hatching, your are much better off trying to match the hatch in this stream
because the trout can become selective on some of the insects.
Blue-winged Olives are the most plentiful insect on the stream. The start hatching in late
March and continue off and on, depending on the species, until the middle of October.
You will find several species of stoneflies, beginning in March with Little Brown Early
Stoneflies and Little Black Early Stoneflies. Both are actually in the same family of Little
Brown Stoneflies. The hatch last less than a month.
Blue Quills hatch starting near the first of April and last for about a month and a half.
There is a small Hendrickson hatch that occurs in late April and early May. It is short lived
lasting only about ten days.
Sulphurs hatch in June and early July. The hatch is not huge but good enough for you to
catch plenty of trout from it. Tricos start hatching about the middle of July. The hatch last
until October. It is one of the better hatches.
In late August, the White Flies or White Drakes hatch in the lower section of the stream. It
can be one of the better mayfly hatches.
Caddisflies are also plentiful on Bushkill Creek. The Green Sedge is one of the more
plentiful species. It starts to hatch in late April and last until the end of June. Cinnamon
and Spotted Sedges are also plentiful. There are several other species of caddisflies that
are of minor importance.
Sculpin, baitfish, scuds and sowbugs also exist in the stream. Terrestrials can become
important during the summer. Beetles and ants are the most abundant ones but there are
also grass hoppers and crickets that the trout can feed on.
