Fly Fishing Guide, Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the Little Red
We recommend either a 5 or 6 weight floating fly line for most of the rainbow and brown trout
fishing. You could use a lighter weight fly line, such as a 4 weight.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes. The four, five and six
weight rods would be ideal at a length of nine feet. We recommend a medium to medium fast
The reels for the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines should have good drags. They should be smooth
and adjust to fine increments. You don't want to hook one of the Little Red River's huge trout
and end up with a broken tippet because you had a less than adequate fly reel.
You should be using at least a seven foot leader anywhere on this river. A nine foot length
would probably be the best all around length. The only exception would be when you are
fishing streamers. A 12 foot leader may be preferred in smooth water sections of the river.
Make sure you have leaders in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small flies.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the Little Red River. We prefer the
breathable type but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing during the winter.
Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well. They have at other
similar waters where we've tried them.
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory.
You probably shouldn't be fishing the Little Red River without a landing net. There are some
trout in the tailwater section that will make you wish you did have one.
Perfect Flies have proven to be very effective on the Little Red River. We have several
customers who regularly use our flies on this stream. They closely imitate all the real aquatic
insects, crustaceans and terrestrials that are found on and in the stream. We have specific
imitations of all the insects in all stages of life. If you haven't already tried them, we certainly
hope you will. We are confident you will find them highly effective. Give us a call or email and
we can help you make your selections.
