Fly Fishing The Malheur River Oregon
The Malheur River is a 190 mile-long tributary of the
famous Snake River located in eastern Oregon. It flows
through a high desert area near the Harney Basin and
the Blue Mountains. Fly fishing the Malheur River varies
greatly depending on the particular location you fish.
The river is a combination of the freestone forks that form
it and two tailwaters. The main stem of the Malheur River
and the North Fork of the Malheur River provide the best
fishing opportunities. The South Fork flows through
Fly Fishing the Malheur River is most popular below
Warm Springs Reservoir. There are about fifteen miles of
water that holds a good population of rainbow trout in the
Public access is good on this section because it is within
the Riverside Wildlife Area owned by the State of Oregon.
There is also about eight miles of fishing opportunity
available below the town of Juntura on the main stem.
The water is used mostly for irrigation and the flows from
the dam remain steady during the Summer.
The North Fork of the Malheur River is a 59 mile long
tributary of the Malheur River. The headwaters of the
North Fork of the Malheur River flows from the Malheur
National Forest into Beulah Reservoir.
There is also some fishing opportunity below Beulah
Reservoir downstream to its junction with the main stem
of the Malheur River..
This river is at its best during the Fall months.
Late Spring can be okay if the stream flows are

Summer but the flows remain steady and on the high
Fall is the best time for fly fishing the Malheur River.
