Fly Fishing Gear for the Metolius River Oregon
Most all of the flies you will need to use on the Metolius River are small. You may want to throw
a medium size streamer occasionally, but that would be about the only exception we can think
of. The trout are not small. There are some nice size trout, so you don't want to go too light
with your tackle.

Fly Line:
You can use fly lines lighter than a 5 weight floating line, but that's what we are recommending
for the least size fly line. Some anglers may prefer to use a 6 weight fly line for their streamer
fishing, but it wouldn't be absolutely necessary.

Leaders:
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 1X for streamers up to a 7X for small dry flies. You
should carry them in lengths ranging from 9 feet up to 15 feet. There are many situations
where a long leader is required.

Tippets:
You should have plenty of extra tippet material ranging from 1X to 7X.

Fly Rods:
We recommend a 5 weight fly rod for almost all of the fishing on the Metolius River. It should be
a medium action rod from eight and one-half feet to nine feet in length. We would prefer a nine
foot length. If you use a 6 weight line for streamers, you would want a 6 weight fly rod in a
medium fast action that was nine feet in length.

Fly Reels:
The fly reel you use for the 5 or 6 weight line should have a very good drag. It should be as
light as possible and its drag should be adjustable in fine increments. This is an advantage
when you are fishing light tippets which you will be fishing often.

Waders:
We recommend waders. You wouldn't have many options without them although there are
plenty of places you can fish from the bank.

Wading Boots:
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots. You may want to consider the new rubber
sole boots to prevent the spread of Didymo.

Landing Net:
We think a landing net is a great idea for anyone wanting to make sure they land one of the
Metolius River's large trout. You would be quite brave if you choose to not use one.

Trout Flies:
We definitely recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. They are by far the best flies for the
Metolius River because they are the most realistic flies you can purchase. We have imitations
of every insect and other trout food that is present in the river. If you haven't done so already,
we ask you to give them a try. We know you will not be disappointed. In fact we guarantee them
to the point that if you are not satisfied, you can return them.
