Fly Fishing The Middle River -
Yellowstone National Park
The Middle River is one of the most overlooked streams
in Yellowstone National Park. It's a small stream that
flows northeast from the Absaroka Range for about five
miles inside the park before it converges with the North
Fork river about two miles outside of Yellowstone
National Park. It's a low gradient stream except for its
uppermost parts. There it's rather steep and fast
flowing. There are meadow and timber sections in its
lower part.
The trout are mostly cutthroats that average nine to
twelve inches but brook trout are also present,
especially in the headwaters. It has some very nice size
brook trout.
The stream can be accessed from the East Entrance
Road. Starting just inside the park, the road follows the
stream closely for a few miles. It is rarely fished for some
reason. That is why we call it one of the most overlooked
streams in the park. Since it is located along a major
entrance road to the park, you would think it would be
heavily fished. There are many other areas to fish along
the North Fork River that extends from near the park
entrance all the way to Cody Wyoming and that may be
part of the reason why. It could also be that the area is
known for its grizzly bears. That will scare many anglers
away. Never-the-less, it's a great small stream to fish.

The season on the Middle doesn't get underway until
