Fly Fishing Tackle, Gear and Trout Flies for the North Fork of the
White River Missouri
They are some big trout in the stream, so you don't want to go too light with your tackle.
You can use fly lines lighter than a 5 weight floating line but that is what we are
recommending for the least size fly line. Most anglers may prefer to use a 6 weight fly line
for fishing large nymphs and streamers, but it would not be absolutely necessary. Sinking
tip lines come in handy in fishing the deep pools and runs, so you may want to consider
Your leaders should range in sizes from a 2X for streamers up to 7X for small dry flies like
the Trico imitations. You should carry them in lengths ranging from 9 feet up to 15 feet.
There are many situations where a long leader is required. You may want to use shorter
leaders for streamers.
You should have plenty of extra tippet material ranging from 2X to 7X.
We recommend a 5 weight fly rod for almost all of the fishing on the North Fork of the
White River. It should be a medium action rod from eight and one-half feet to nine feet in
length. We would prefer a nine foot length if you are going to use it for nymphs. If you use
a 6 weight line for larger nymphs and streamers, you would want a 6 weight fly rod in a
medium fast action that was nine feet in length.
The fly reels you use for the 5 and 6 weight fly lines should have very good drags. They
should be as light as possible and their drag should be adjustable in fine increments. This
is an advantage when you are fishing light tippets.
We recommend waders. You wouldn't have many options without them.
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots. The bottom of the North Fork is slick. You
may want to consider the new rubber sole boots to prevent the spread of Didymo.
We think a landing net is a great idea for anyone wanting to make sure they land one of
the large trout. They are purely optional.
We recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. They are by far the best flies for spring creeks
because they are the most realistic flies you can purchase. We have imitations of every
insect and other trout food that is present in this stream. If you haven't done so already,
we ask you to give them a try. We know you will not be disappointed.
