Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Norfolk River in Arkansas
Trout in the Norfork River tailwater can grow to a very large size. Brown trout larger than
twenty inches are common. The rainbows get up to ten pounds. You do not want to hook
one of these larger trout and have gear that is just too light, so we are not recommending
anything under a five weight category as you will see.
We recommend either a 5 or 6 weight floating fly line for most of the rainbow and brown
trout fishing. You could use a lighter weight fly line, such as a 4 weight.
You would want a fly rod to handle each of the above line sizes. The four, five and six
weight rods would be ideal at a length of nine feet. We recommend a medium to medium
The reels for the 4, 5 and 6 weight lines should have good drags. They should be smooth
and adjust to fine increments. You don't want to hook one of the Norfork River's big trout
and end up with a broken tippet because you had a less than adequate fly reel.
You should be using at least a seven foot leader anywhere on this river. A nine foot length
would probably be the best all around length. The only exception would be when you are
fishing streamers. A 12 foot leader may be preferred in smooth water sections of the river.
Make sure you have leaders in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small flies.
You should also have plenty of extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Waders are necessary just about anywhere you fish the Norfork River. We prefer the
breathable type but you may need neoprene waders if you are fishing during the winter.
Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well. They have at other
similar waters where we've tried them.
The use of a wading staff would be an optional accessory.
You probably shouldn't be fishing the Norfork River without a landing net.
As always we recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. We suggest a good selection of
streamers. We think our scud and sowbugs imitations are the best you can buy and you
want to have some of them for sure. If you haven't already tried our flies, we certainly hope
you will. We are confident you will find them very effective on the Norfolk River.
