Oatka Creek Brown Trout
Fly Fishing Oatka Creek New York
Oatka Creek could be considered as being in three
completely different sections. It could include a major
tributary, Spring Creek, or Spring Creek could be
considered separately. In this article, we are considering
it as three sections, only two of which are important for
trout, and with Spring Creek as a tributary.

Fly fishing Oatka Creek is best in its lower section below
LeRoy. There's also a small stream section in it's
headwaters where there's plenty of bushes and trees to
keep the water cool. The middle section is too warm for
trout. The section below the warm section is the best
due to two major tributary streams adding cool spring
water to the creek. One is the "Blue Hole" near LeRoy
and the other is Spring Creek near Mumford. This
converts Oatka Creek into a trophy trout stream with
good fishing opportunities and plenty of aquatic insects,
scuds and other trout foods. The brown trout are
stocked but the stream also has a good stream-bred
population of brown trout.

The section from Union Street upstream almost 2 miles
to Wheatland Center Road is a no-kil, year-round
section but using only artificial lures or flies. From
Bowerman Road upstream about a mile and a half to
Union Street, and from Wheatland Center Road
upstream two and a half miles to the mouth of Spring
Creek, is a no kill, artificial only section but it's open only
from Oct 16 through March 31. All other sections are
open for year-round fishing.

Spring Creek is the location of the famous Caledonia
trout hatchery. This is where brown trout were first
successfully introduced in North America. You can fish
only two very small sections of the stream including
some within the hatchery area. About a thousand feet is
open to the public below the hatchery. The water is
crystal clear and the brown trout are beautiful. It's catch
and release, artificial only fishing.

Season:
The season varies depending on the section. See
above.
Winter:
Fly fishing Oatka Cree during the Winter is great.
Spring:
Springtime is normally a good time to for fly fishing
Oatka Creek because of the hatches.
Summer:
Trout fishing stays pretty good during the Summer due
to the cool discharge of the spring water.
Fall:
Fall is a great time, maybe the best time for big browns.
