Fly Fishing Gear for the Raven Fork (GSMNP) North Carolina
The Raven Fork, inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is a small stream
but difficult to access and to wade. The trout are mostly brook trout that average about
six to eight inches long. There are also a few rainbow trout in the lower end of the
You will most likely be using small dry flies for the brook trout. We would say the ideal
fly line size would be a 4 weight, floating fly line. There would be nothing wrong with an
even lighter line. If you fish heavy nymphs and small streamers, you may prefer a 5
weight fly line to deliver the larger flies. A 4 weight line would work okay for everything.
Depending on which fly line sizes you prefer, then you would want a fly rod for each line
size you chose. Many anglers would only take one rod and a backup rod because you
would be packing everything into the Raven Fork and probably camping overnight. The
length of the rods should be nine feet long. We think a moderately fast to fast action
would be best for this one.
The reel for the 4 and 5 weight line isn't important as long as it is light.
You should probably be using at least a 7 and one half foot leader. Most of the time
you would probably want to use a 9 foot leader. I would suggest having them in sizes
ranging from 1X for streamers, up to 6X for small dry fly imitations in both the 7
and one half and nine foot lengths.
Make sure you have plenty of extra tippet material in sizes ranging from 1X to 6X.
Waders would be necessary for the Raven Fork unless it is warm enough for you to wet
wade. We recommend the breathable type.
Most of the bottom is rock. You would not want cleats. Felt soles are the best. We
haven't tried the new rubber soles on this stream yet, but we would think they would
work just fine. There is little algae in the stream.
A landing net would be a purely optional item. Many anglers don't care to pack one in
and out for the brook trout.
As always, we recommend our "Perfect Fly" trout flies. They're not only the most
realistic flies you can purchase, they're the most effective trout flies you can purchase.
If you haven't already done so, please give them a try.
