Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for the Roaring Fork River,
We are recommending either a 4 weight or lighter floating fly line for the small brook trout
and in the headwaters of the Roaring Fork River. The 4 weight line would also work for the
brown and rainbow trout there. You could actually get by with a 5 weight, floating fly line for
most of the fishing. Many anglers would prefer something heavier for larger nymphs and
streamers and if so, we would recommend a 6 weight fly line.
Leaders should range in sizes from a 0X for streamers up to a 6X for small dry flies such
as midges. Lengths ranging from seven and one-half feet for the fast pocket water, up to
12 feet in length for some of the smoother sections of the river.
You should carry extra tippet material ranging from 0X to 6X for the leaders listed above.
For the 4, 5 and 6 weight fly rods we suggest a medium fast to fast action rod in a nine
The 4, 4 and 6 weight line size fly reels should be light as possible but all have good drags.
We recommend waders even though there would be few places you could fish without
them. We prefer the breathable type but you may want to consider neoprene waders for
cold weather fishing.
We recommend felt soles for your wading boots.
As always, we recommend "Perfect Fly" trout flies. They are not only the most imitative flies
on the market, they're also the most effective. We have specific imitations of all aquatic
insects and other trout food that exist in the Roaring Fork River. We suggest you look at
our hatch chart and select the flies for the particular time of year you plan on fishing.
