Rogue River - Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Flies
Fly Lines:
We recommend an 8 or 9 weight floating, sinking-tip lines and shooting heads of various
densities for the steelhead in the Rogue River. You will need floating fly lines ranging from a 4
weight up to a 6 weight line for trout. 5 and 6 weight lines are best for the half-pounder
steelhead.
Fly Rods:
For the Steelhead, you should use a 8 to 9 weight fly rod of a medium fast to fast action. Single
and two-handed fly rods work well, depending on your preferences. The trout and
half-pounder fly rods could range from a 4 to a 6 weight, in lengths 9 foot and longer.. Medium
fast to fast actions work best for this in our opinion. Spey rod are also popular for steelhead.
Fly Reels:
The fly reels will range from a 4 weight fly reel all the way up to a 9 weight, depending on which
species of fish you are after and the size of the fly line you are using. Whichever fly reel size
you are using should have a good drag. Disc drags are normally the best types but there are
others. Just don't skimp on the quality of your fly reel when it comes to handling big fish.
Leader:
The leaders for the steelhead should be in the 0X range. Leaders for spey rods, irregardless
of the species, should be from 10 to 15 feet, depending on the rod length. The length of the
leader depends on the particular fly you are using. Most anglers prefer a 7 to 9 foot length.
Leaders for the trout should range from a 2X for streamers, up to 6X for small flies.
Pre-tappered leaders should range in lengths from 7 to 9 feet.
Tippet:
Tippet for the steelhead should be in the 0X size. The size depends greatly on the leader size
and particular fly you are using. I suggest you have spare tippet material ranging from 0X down
to 6X.
Waders:
Waders are necessary for fishing the Rogue River. We prefer the breathable type but you may
want neoprene waders during the cold months.
Wading Boots:
Wading boots with either rubber or felt soles will work for the Rogue River.
Landing Net::
You should have a landing net and it should be large if you are fishing the Winter steelhead
run. An area of about 15 by 20 inches is preferred. The length should be around 30 inches.
Wading Staff:
A wading staff will come in real handy is you wade any of the fast water sections of the Rogue
River.
Flies:
We always recommend "Perfect Flies" because they are simply the best flies you can
purchase. We have specific imitations of just about everything fish eat. If you haven't tried
them yet, we certainly hope you will. Over 80 percent of our customers have reordered and
those that haven't probably will in the future. We have a complete section of Pacific salmon
and steelhead flies.
