Fly Fishing Gear and Trout Flies for South Fork of the Snake River
The South Fork of the Snake River has some large trout. It is not a stream you would want
to be fishing your favorite three weight fly rod on.
We just can't imagine anyone wanting anything lighter than five-weight line even though
midges may be the preferred flies. We couldn't recommend anything lighter than a
five-weight fly line. Most of the time the line should be a floating line. There could be
situations where you would want a sinking tip line for streamers. For large nymphs, like the
salmonfly nymphs, you would be better off using a 6 weight fly line.
The rod for the 5 or 6 weight line should be nine feet in length in a medium fast to fast
The reels for the 5 and 6 weight fly lines should have good drags. Again, there are some
large trout in the South Fork of the Snake River and you would not want to loose one
because you were using a lousy fly reel. You need a very good drag on either of the reels.
You will be using a very large range of leaders both in length and size. The large streamers
would require heavy leaders. The tiny midge flies that you may use, would require exactly
the opposite. Leaders ranging in sizes from 0X down to 6X may be required. Leader
lengths should range from 71/2 feet to 12 feet.
Extra tippet in sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.
Even if you drift the river, you would want to use waders. You may have to or want to get out
of the boat.
Felt soles or either the new rubber sole boots would work best.
We would say a wading staff is optional. It would be a good thing to have if you got caught
in rising water.
We recommend our "Perfect Flies" for the South Fork. We have specific imitations of every
insect found on the river. They are simi-realistic and very effective. If you haven't done so
already, we ask you to give them a try. We are certain you will find them very effective on
the South Fork of the Snake River.
