Fly Fishing Sixmile Run Pennsylvania
Sixmile Run is a small, limestone spring creek (with
plenty of runoff) located in Central Pennsylvania near
Philipsburg. The stream has a good population of wild
and native trout in some areas but it's also stocked. It
flows into Moshannon Creek. The stream has some
problems that aren't conductive to good trout habitat,
but fly fishing Sixmile Run is still a worthwhile stream to
fish if your in the area.
Sixmile Run stays fairly cool during the summer. Springs
help with the water temperature. The temperature
greatly depends on the area of water you fish. Upstream
of State Route #504, there are some ponds that slow
the flow down but also provide some deeper water for
the trout to hold in. Below #504, most of the water is
shallow runs and riffles with few pools.
Access is easy in most areas. Sixmile Road follows the
entire six mile long section that's fishable. This means it
gets a lot of pressure from the "catch to eat" guys
during the Spring months. The upper section, above
#504 is very small and the banks are lined solid with
bushes and trees. Casting is difficult in the upper
section.
Surprisingly, the stream has large population of aquatic
insects. Hatches are usually good and dry fly fishing can
be very good at times. The stream contains some large
drake mayflies and well as the typical ones.
