Fly Fishing Gear, Tackle and Trout Flies for the Smith River
The tailwater section of this stream has some big trout in it, so you don't want to fish
with too light of a fly rod and tippet. It is not unusual to see brown trout caught over
eighteen inches and larger.
We suggest a 5 weight fly line for most of the fly-fishing. You may want to use a 6
weight line for heavy nymphs and streamers.
We suggest a 5 weight, floating fly line for most of the fly-fishing. You could use a 4
weight line for dry fly fishing but we don't recommend it. You should use a 6 weight
floating fly line for heavy nymphs and streamers.
The four, five and six weight rod should be nine feet in length. A medium to moderately
fast action would be best.
The reel for the five and six weight rods should have a good drag. You don't want to
hang a large brown trout and loose it because of a poor drag. It should be smooth and
adjust to fine increments.
You should be using at least a 9 foot leader anywhere you fish the Smith River. You
should have leaders in sizes ranging from 0X for streamers, up to 6X for small midge
Be sure to carry extra tippet material matching your leader sizes ranging from 0X to 6X.

Felt soles would be our choice. The new rubber soles may work well.

River and matching what's most plentiful and available at the time is key. We have
specific imitations of all the important terrestrial and aquatic insects in all stages of life
that are applicable. If you haven't already tried them, we hope you will. You won't be
